Thanos is the most famous villain in the Marvel universe. Even outside of the movies, he was the great evil that brought many of the heroes together. Originally, however, he did not have such a thought-out reason for all his actions. He did everything for love.
Who is Thanos? Thanos is an Eternal, born on the moon Titan. His birth drove his mother Sui-San insane. Even as a child, he had an insatiable thirst for power. He even killed his own mother as a child.
Thanos is known in the universe as a ruthless ruler who has conquered and enslaved many worlds. He rules with strictness and violence. His perhaps greatest act was the annihilation of half the universe, for which he collected the Infinity Stones. Unlike in the well-known movies, Thanos had a simpler reason.
Thanos wanted to fight for his love
What was Thanos’ original motivation? In the films, Thanos always talks about restoring the balance of resources and living beings. For this, he erases half of all living things in the universe. He almost appears as a thoughtful villain who believes he is simply doing the right thing in his logic.
In his original story in the comics, Thanos was obsessed with Mistress Death, who visited him at a young age. She is essentially Death—a being that has been the embodiment of mortality since ancient times. In the Marvel universe, she is depicted as a woman, usually with a skull head.
Thanos fell in love with this entity and did everything to gain her love. He wreaked havoc in the universe, bringing death and destruction. This also motivated him to collect the Infinity Stones and destroy half of the universe. This happened in the event Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, which started in 1991.
Thanos is resurrected by Mistress Death to correct a false balance between life and death. However, his actions do not impress Death in the way he wants, and ultimately she even turns against him. This also shows the contradictory relationship between the two, which often goes in all directions.
Thanos even has a rival. Due to his constant near-death experiences, Deadpool regularly encounters Mistress Death and falls in love with her as well. But nothing comes of it, as Deadpool can practically never die. Another person is regularly visited by Thanos: For almost 50 years, Marvel villain Thanos has been visiting a poor guy on his birthday just to annoy him.
