The Metaverse must become a big success in 2025 or it will go down in history as a ‘legendary misadventure’
Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta, gives the Metaverse one year to become a hit, according to an internal forum post reported by Businessinsider. Specifically, it is mainly about “Reality Labs”: The department was formerly known as Oculus VR and is now part of Meta Platforms, which is responsible for hardware and software for virtual reality. This year [2025] will likely determine whether this entire effort will be remembered as the work of visionaries or as a legendary misadventure.
Bosworth adds that Reality Labs, although 2024 is expected to be the best year for the department, “has not yet made a real dent in the world.” The group is now smaller after layoffs and the success of Meta’s Ray-Bans and AI efforts, but Bosworth writes that this will not be sufficient for 2025. They must establish the project “Horizon Worlds” worldwide. And in the end, 2025 will determine whether they succeed or fail miserably.
Bosworth himself stated: One does not need to throw fantastic new ideas onto the market. Instead, one should just do the work well.
Meta’s VR department has been suffering billion-dollar losses for years
