The numbers for digital revenue in March 2019 for online games are here. The statistics are dominated by The Division 2, which has celebrated a strong launch. Other than that, especially battle royale games like Apex Legends or Fortnite are performing well. Anthem, on the other hand, disappears from the top 10.
What are these numbers? These data come from SuperData. Here, all digital revenues of the games are recorded. This refers to sales in in-game shops, or for example in the PS Store or the Microsoft Store.
So this does not refer to retail sales of the individual games.
This is what the numbers from SuperData show in March 2019
The launch of The Division 2 went well: March 2019 shines with The Division 2. On the consoles PS4 and Xbox One, the Tom Clancy shooter is in first place.
These numbers show that the shooter likely brought in a significant amount of money at launch and can likely be considered a success.
Apex Legends is another winner: Apex Legends surprisingly released in February 2019. In that month, the battle royale game set numerous records.
In the following month, it is now evident that Apex Legends remains relevant in the gaming market. In PC games, the game is in 9th place, and on consoles, it is even in 6th place. Last month, Apex Legends was in 6th place on PC and 4th place on consoles. It is losing very little relevance.
Battle Royale dominates: In addition to Apex Legends, Fortnite is also still in the top 10 of PC and console games. It has secured its place for months and it shows that the battle royale genre remains very popular.
Anthem is a clear loser: The hype surrounding the release of Anthem is over. The game was released in February 2019 and landed at 3rd place among console games at that time.
In March, BioWare’s game is not even in the top 10 anymore. Its digital revenues must have dropped significantly. It remains to be seen whether Anthem will return to the top 10 with upcoming updates.
What about mobile games? In mobile games, Perfect World is a newcomer at number 1. This MMORPG is especially played a lot in the Asian region.
Pokémon GO continues to hold the 4th place in the rankings. It will be exciting to see where the augmented reality game will finish in the coming months, as it is getting warmer and players are being drawn outside by numerous events.
