Bungie’s new game has kicked off a server slam, and with it, the first opinions on Marathon are rolling in. What the community thinks about the game, you can find out here.
How is Marathon being received? Very differently. Many small groups have formed in the community, each representing different opinions. These include:
- Those who are already celebrating the game but noting some issues
- Those who can’t make anything of Marathon
- Those who are tearing the game apart
- Those who are complaining about the haters
Through the server slam, interested players can now try out the game and form an opinion for free. With ARC Raiders in tow, there is also another title with which Marathon can be compared. Many opinions are thus flowing in on Reddit and sparking discussions.
Many fans are intentionally giving Marathon no chance
What are fans discussing? One of the largest threads on Reddit regarding the server slam comes from user spectre15, who addresses an issue within the community. For him, it is one of the most miserable open betas he has ever played, and the fault lies not with Marathon, but with the community.
For him, constructive criticism is legitimate, especially when it comes to helping Marathon improve. However, what he sees is not help, but whining, and not even about the game itself. With over 1,000 upvotes, other fans agree with him.

In chats of various Twitch streamers, the game is given little chance. There are doubts as to why the respective content creator is even taking the time for the shooter.
nve729, however, does it differently. He shared his opinion in a separate post on Reddit. The shooter feels “wrong” for what it promised. There are far too few PvP conflicts, maps are empty, and the real danger only comes from the NPCs. The UI is also somewhat unusual. For him, at the moment, the shooter is a disappointment and does not meet the hype he expected. With over 1400 upvotes, many users agree with nve729.
On the other hand, spectre15 played the server slam with two other players from ARC Raiders and they were thrilled. The shooter feels good, the world looks cool, and the fights are more exciting because everything takes place in first-person.
So it’s clear: the opinions could not be more different.
It remains to be seen how Marathon will perform at the full release. ARC Raiders also faced criticisms back then, as the genre around extraction shooters is controversial.
Many believed that the shooter from Embark could only fail, yet months after its release, fans rush to Speranza and are thrilled with the experience that ARC Raiders can offer. Marathon could achieve this too and position itself in a niche more suited for PvP enthusiasts, because one thing is clear – there are hardly any friendly interactions in this dystopian world.
