The new shooter from Bungie has had a tough time in the community, as many were initially unwilling to give Marathon a chance. However, the new showcase was able to change players’ opinions, and now everyone is waiting for a date.
What is Marathon struggling with? Marathon did not have a good start with shooter fans. Many players were skeptical about the title for several reasons:
- The management change resulted in popular ideas being discarded during development: For example, customizable protagonists were replaced by predefined runners.
- Bungie pulled developers from Destiny 2 for Marathon, which hurt the loot shooter
- There was an unintended plagiarism incident in the design, which Bungie is said to have resolved
- Marathon appeared lifeless and generic in terms of design.
All of this led to a preference for distancing oneself from Marathon, even though the universe surrounding Marathon seemed interesting. User Varsher1 on Reddit was also among the skeptics, but after the latest showcase for the shooter, he was able to change his opinion.
Bungie shows a much better Marathon than a few months ago
What do critics say about the showcase? For Varsher1, a Tarkov fan, a lot has changed since the last reveal. Bungie has worked on Marathon and polished the shooter nicely after the delay.
The removal of death boxes and the adjustment of characters and menus have benefited the game and helped rekindle Varsher1’s interest in the shooter. He is not alone in this, as many other players share the change of opinion. Here’s what can be heard:

Many are now waiting for a special date to form a final opinion about Marathon.
What date is so important? This concerns the server slam, which is set to take place on February 26 at 7:00 PM German time. Marathon will then be available for free to all players. You can test the shooter until March 2 at 7:00 PM and see for yourself. At this point, fans will finally be able to find out if Marathon is for them or not.
