WoW Classic has brought many players back to Azeroth. But some of them have really fallen in love with “Retail-WoW” afterwards. Did you feel the same way?
The release of World of Warcraft Classic must have been nothing short of a huge success for Blizzard. After all, the release caused the largest increase in subscribers in the history of the MMORPG.
However, the golden days of World of Warcraft Classic did not last very long. Dissatisfaction was mainly caused by the PvP update, since some servers were completely thrown into chaos and the introduction of Alterac Valley also somewhat tarnished the shine of Classic.
Players are moving from Classic to Retail: While the advantages and disadvantages of WoW Classic and “Retail-WoW” (i.e. the modern WoW with Battle for Azeroth) are often discussed on Reddit and in the official forums, there seems to be an ever-growing group of players who have not journeyed from Retail to Classic, but vice versa.
Time and again, players are reported to have learned through Classic that Retail is actually a really good game. Comments like the one from Reddit user mjeed03 are often seen:
I came back for Classic and then stayed for Retail.
Some players elaborate a bit more on their opinion. For instance, keshikeshkesh writes on Reddit:
Yes, likewise – at least to a certain extent. Even the simplest endgame content of Retail far exceeds what is available in Classic, whether raids or reputation grinds.
But in terms of content that is not strictly endgame content, I find Classic superior. Leveling is more challenging, low-level dungeons are immersive and rewarding, and character progression exists at every level.
I really wish there was a combination of the two – the leveling experience of Classic and the endgame of Retail. I think that would be fantastic.
WoW: Shadowlands, on the other hand, seems to learn quite a bit from Classic.
Other players, like Slaythepuppy, see the balance of Classic as the main problem as to why it couldn’t hold their attention for long:
My biggest concern with Classic is the balance. While WoW was never the best when it came to balance, Classic feels like the worst balanced version of WoW, and it only gets more extreme with the release of new phases.
