The role-playing game Erenshor is set to be released on Steam in 2024. At first glance, it seems like an MMORPG from the late 1990s or early 2000s, but we are the only human in the game. All other characters we meet in the game are controlled by AI.
What idea is behind Erenshor?
- Erenshor is a single-player experience that pays tribute to past MMORPGs. The developer states in the reddit forum that it should play exactly like EverQuest.
- All players in Erenshor are simulated. They behave like real humans and invite us to groups, for example, or continue to play after we have logged out.
- The special thing about the game is that it is not as stressful as a real MMORPG. We can take several weeks off, and the AI-controlled players remain at the approximate level we had at our last login.
- The game includes MMORPG-typical content such as guilds and raids.
- We can make our own decisions independently of other players. Whether we stash the loot only in our own bags or end our gaming session after just 30 minutes does not concern the AI players.
This could relieve many players of the pressure they feel in real MMORPGs. Here, there is a constant hunt for the best loot and social obligations, especially when we have joined a guild.
Erenshor aims to eliminate all this stress. Players should determine for themselves when they play, for how long, and what activities they engage in. They do not have to fear any silly comments from AI-controlled players. Nevertheless, it should feel like we are adventuring with other people in an MMORPG.
The developer of Erenshor has uploaded a new trailer for the game. In this, you can see that the visuals are inspired by earlier MMORPGs:

Why are gamers so taken with the idea? The creator of the MMORPG presented his idea on Sunday, February 25, on reddit and receives a lot of positive feedback there.
A player feels immediately transported back to the early 2000s. He is excited about the world and feels reminded of the “clunky” EverQuest, which he means as a compliment.
The world is very authentic, especially the simulated players. The user helped a paladin with a tough opponent, for example. When he asked in the chat if other paladins wanted to join the quest, even an AI-controlled paladin stepped up and joined the group.
Another user would have liked to develop such a game himself, but from the isometric 2D view, as seen in classic MMOs. However, he wants to support the developer of Erenshor in his endeavor as much as possible, as it picks up on his own idea.
But there is also criticism: a player asks whether the gameplay of EverQuest is not too outdated for the year 2024. The developer replies that there are currently so many new and modern MMORPGs that one has to look for old classics. Therefore, he decided to keep his single-player MMORPG in line with older MMORPGs.
