During the beta of the MMORPG New World, several high-end graphics cards allegedly malfunctioned. The manufacturer has now explained the reason for this. The cause lies in a technical error during production.
This is the situation: We at MeinMMO reported that some New World players complained that the beta of the MMORPG damaged their hardware. This primarily concerned GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards.
Many users criticized that the temperatures and load of the hardware were very high, especially in the queue or main menu. And that was despite New World having relatively low system requirements.
The manufacturer EVGA has now responded and explained why the graphics cards actually malfunctioned. EVGA is a hardware manufacturer that primarily offers Nvidia graphics cards and has now also entered the market for motherboards and peripherals (mice and keyboards).
This is the problem: The manufacturer EVGA now reported that they received around two dozen defective GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards, for which they had blamed the New World beta.
All the cards in question are from an earlier production series that was manufactured in 2020. An x-ray analysis revealed that the solder joints around the MOSFET circuits, which powered the affected cards, were poorly processed and then caused the graphics cards to malfunction.
What is this component? MOSFETs are semiconductor components that are soldered onto the circuit board of the graphics card and have various functions here. The MOSFETs are part of the power unit of the graphics card and are an essential component of the voltage regulators (VRM). Other components would include electrolytic capacitors and coils. A diode measures the temperature of the graphics card.
MMORPG New World received an update to resolve issues
How New World responded: Amazon Games quickly pushed an update for its MMORPG beta. The first New World beta version did not implement a frame rate limiter in the menu system. As a result, some users suddenly experienced FPS numbers of 800 FPS or more in the main menu. Many users criticized this, and Amazon quickly made adjustments.
How many graphics cards actually malfunctioned and whether other manufacturers are affected is not known. There are no reliable numbers or facts available so far, except for various reddit posts complaining about their malfunctioning graphics cards. There are also rumors that older Radeon and GeForce cards may be affected.
