A man allegedly stole 200 consoles, including PS5 and Nintendo Switch devices, and secretly sold them. The consoles were supposed to be shipped. The thief stole consoles worth 5.8 million yen (about 35,000 euros).
PS5 consoles are currently a rare commodity and hardly available – or only from greedy scalpers at a hefty markup. Some even go so far as to steal, for example, graphics cards like the RTX 3090 directly from the factory.
Now, another strange case has occurred. In Japan, a man did not simply steal one console but 200 pieces. Among them were, in addition to the PS5, also Nintendo Switch consoles and older models of the DS series. He then resold all these consoles.
Man allegedly sells dozens of PS5 consoles in secret
This is what happened: An allegedly 50-year-old man in Tokyo is said to have resold 200 PS5 consoles, Nintendo Switch devices, and corresponding games. At least, this is reported by the Japanese magazine Sankai.com.
The man is said to have worked for a company that delivers goods. But instead of delivering the load, he simply sold the consoles to various stores in Tokyo. He is said to have made a profit of around 3 million yen. This is about 23,000 euros.
After the sale, the person mainly spent time in internet cafes throughout Tokyo. Such internet cafes are much better equipped than those in Germany. In some of the cafes, you can sleep, take a shower, or get free drinks.
The Japanese police agency is reported to have arrested the man on “suspicion of embezzlement.” How and under what circumstances he was arrested is not known.
Gambled money on horse races
The suspected person stated after the arrest that he sold the entire load because he had financial problems. He explained, “I bet almost all the money on horse racing” (via kotaku.com).
This is not the first supplier who does not deliver a console and instead keeps or resells it. For example, an Amazon driver who was supposed to deliver a PS5 console simply repackaged the device and never delivered it. The robbed family then contacted Amazon directly with evidence:
