Would you like to earn money while playing? The concept already exists and is called Play2Earn.
The dream of making money through gaming has existed almost as long as the industry itself. Whether through direct game development, gaming journalism, streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, or in eSports: many passionate gamers have already managed to turn their hobby into a job.
Over time, more and more options have opened up for interested players, and one of them is now also Play2Earn.
What does Play2Earn mean? It refers to the concept where players have the chance to earn in-game assets while playing. These assets can theoretically be converted into ‘valuable resources from the real world.’ In simple terms: you have the chance to make a profit while playing.
Games that offer or are based on Play2Earn usually utilize blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
- In Axie Infinity, an idle battle game, players can earn an Ethereum-based in-game cryptocurrency that they can convert into real money. It’s also possible to trade on the game’s open market and earn profits as well.
- In the MMORPG MIR4, players can convert their characters into NFTs or mine for Darksteel, the cryptocurrency of MIR4.
- The upcoming MMORPG ArcheWorld will also provide the option to convert characters, skins, pets, mounts, etc., into NFTs. In-game, players will be able to earn Archeum, which can then be exchanged for the cryptocurrency BORA.
The concept itself is not new and is not tied to blockchain technology. The auction house of Diablo 3 already offered players these opportunities, and players can earn thousands of dollars with rare skins on the CS:GO skin market.
However, most new gaming projects offering Play2Earn focus more on blockchain and crypto.
On paper, the concept sounds enticing and has already led to people earning good money through gaming. At the same time, there are regularly reports of scams related to blockchain games, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies.
