The “War of the Sparks” is also making its way into the computer game version of Magic: The Gathering – Arena. For the first time, a story event is taking place.
What is Magic: The Gathering Arena? It is the successful digital version of the popular collectible card game from Wizards of the Coast. The version is developed by Wizards themselves to provide the most authentic experience possible.
With the “Game Rules Engine,” the game can constantly evolve. This makes it possible for new expansions of the real card game to be transitioned into the video game version with minimal changes. The effectiveness of this will be shown now.
The War of the Sparks begins!
What has been announced? Starting May 23, the “War of the Sparks” will take place in the game. This event will last for five weeks and is based on the namesake event of the real card game.
What is special about it? Until now, the story played hardly any role in Magic: The Gathering Arena. It has been all about battles with various cards and decks. This is now changing with the “War of the Sparks.” You will experience a story similar to the campaigns of Hearthstone, such as “The Big Coup”, and learn more about the lore of the game world.
What is the story of “War of the Sparks”? The story revolves around the invasion of the dragon Nicol Bolas, who is trying to become a god. He infiltrates Ravnica, and the story tells of the resistance against the dragon.

An interesting event
How does the event work? There will be weekly events that you can participate in.
- May 23 to 31 – Ravnica at War: Players get a predefined card deck with 36 planeswalkers in a 96-card deck.
- May 31 to June 7 – No Escape: Players can only use “Commons” cards.
- June 7 to 14 – Storm the Citadel: Players cannot use decks with duplicates – except for land cards.
- June 14 to 21 – Commence the Endgame: Counter cards receive a +1/+1 bonus for all creatures that already have one. All planeswalkers receive an additional loyalty counter, and all receive Amass 1.
- June 21 to 28 – Ravnica Block: Players can only use decks consisting of cards from Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, or War of the Spark.
What is new? The counters are making their way into the game for the first time. These enable a new style of play.
What rewards are there? A new card style will be unlocked when you complete the event.
