Due to the current Corona pandemic, a card from the trading card game Magic: The Gathering had to be renamed. This is an exciting situation for collectors.
Which card is it? The new card set “Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths” is scheduled for release in May for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. It includes the new card “Spacegodzilla, Death Corona”. In English, it is called: “Spacegodzilla: Death Corona”. With this, Spacegodzilla uses its traditional ability “Corona Beam”.
A renaming that benefits collectors
Why is the card being renamed? The publisher Wizards of the Coast explains that due to the current Corona pandemic, they are renaming the card, as the word Corona has taken on a different meaning and is associated with the disease COVID-19.
The new name of the card will be “Spacegodzilla, Void Invader”.
Why is this interesting for collectors? As Wizards of the Coast explains, some of the cards were already printed with the old name. This means that some versions of the card set “Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths” still include “Spacegodzilla, Death Corona”. In new editions, the renamed card will be included.
This makes the first versions of the card set very sought after by collectors.
- Kanorado99 states on Reddit: “LOL, this could be the next Black Lotus. I’m trying to get one.”
- TheRaineCorporation agrees on Reddit: “This card is going to be worth a lot. I think about twice as much as the Void Invader versions.”
Magic cards are worth their weight in gold
Are Magic cards worth a lot of money? Certain cards from the game are sometimes traded for enormous sums. The Black Lotus card, for example, belongs to the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering. It is part of the first edition of the trading card game from 1993. One of these cards was sold on eBay about a year ago for $166,100.
This shows how much collectors are willing to spend for rare cards in good condition. And the card “Spacegodzilla, Death Corona” is likely to develop similarly. So anyone who buys the Magic card set “Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths” and finds the original card there can consider themselves lucky. It is likely to be worth quite a bit of money over time.
Magic: The Gathering is also available as a hack ‘n slash, where virtual cards still play an important role. MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus has already had a look at this action RPG and will report on what he thinks about it.
