In the MMORPG RuneScape, a mafia is causing trouble and has led to severe inflation in the game.
What is this mafia about? In the MMORPG RuneScape, players use the Revenant Caves to farm gold. The monsters there provide a chance to acquire a substantial amount of money.
However, according to reddit user albmrbo, around 2,000 Venezuelan players have formed a group called “Mafia” and now occupy these caves in the individual game worlds. No one can enter the Revenant Caves without encountering the mafia.
Another example of how strange the community in RuneScape is.

A Mafia in the MMORPG
What does this mafia want? According to the discussion on reddit, the members of the organization offer protection. Thus, it is necessary to pay protection money to the “guild”.
Those who also buy clothing in the mafia’s colors for the necessary cash demonstrate that they are under the group’s protection, or belong to it, and can thus enter the Revenant Caves.
The clothing includes the Purple Hat for currently about 1,500 gold pieces and the Pink Hat for around 640 gold pieces.
Is this new? The offering of protection money so players can farm gold in peace without being harassed by player-killers has been a phenomenon in RuneScape for some time, as can be read on reddit. However, the formation of such a mafia is new and affects the game.
What effects does this have? The Revenant Caves are intended for players to fight dangerous monsters and also engage in combat with each other.
Since only mafia members or players under their protection can enter the caves, no PvP takes place anymore.
As a result, the Revenant Caves have apparently become a place where large amounts of gold can be farmed relatively safely. This affects the economy of the MMORPG RuneScape from the development studio Jagex.
Furthermore, this approach drives away PvP fans, who now avoid the Revenant Caves since, in principle, no fights against other players can take place there anymore.
The purpose of the caves was to create a dangerous area through PvE and PvP, making it a significant risk to stay there, but the reward of obtaining much gold would be even higher.
Thus, the “mafia” not only causes gold inflation in the MMORPG RuneScape, but also fundamentally undermines the purpose behind the Revenant Caves – and apparently on all PvP worlds.
In Venezuela, the MMORPG RuneScape is extremely popular. When the power goes out in the country, the economy in the game collapses.
