Oh, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a battle royale game where you don’t always fight with guns, but sail ships across the sea and fire cannons at each other? Here comes Maelstrom (PC) and it’s already playable on Steam.
Anyone can just develop a new battle royale shooter. But who would want to play the nth clone of PUBG and Fortnite that plays out exactly the same? That’s why the developers at Gunpowder Games came up with something different: Instead of a soldier, you control a pirate ship in the online game Maelstrom.
Battle Royale with Unique Features
Maelstrom plays out very similarly to other battle royale shooters:
- You sail around a large map, the edge of which you should not cross. There, fearsome sea monsters await to turn your ship into driftwood.
- You fight each other with your ships on the map and collect gold.
- Whoever is the last one standing wins.
However, the game also offers some unique features:
- You choose your hero from the races humans, dwarves, and orcs. Humans sail the fastest, orcs effectively ram other ships, and dwarves have the best armor.
- With the collected gold, you can upgrade your ship for the next battle – or you can buy new ships with different attributes.
- Before each battle, you decide which ship you want to participate with.
- Different ships have – depending on their level – different attributes, sail faster, can perform maneuvers more skillfully, or fire in different directions.
- It is possible to form groups with other players – or you can play alone as a lone wolf.
- Monstrous sea creatures roam the map that you must defeat.
The Early Access Version Invites You to Join In
Maelstrom is currently in the early access phase. If you’re interested in a pirate game with a battle royale mode, then get the title for about 17 euros on Steam. The reviews on Steam are currently very positive. The fast-paced battles and the upgrade options for the ships are particularly praised. PUBG with ships seems to be working.
