The MMORPG Lost Ark showcases its diverse influences in the new cinematic trailer: Asian fantasy meets modern steampunk and martial arts.
Lost Ark starts on November 7, 2018, in an open beta in South Korea. This is actually the launch of the MMORPG:
- While we in Europe still have to wait for the game and it is rather an exotic choice,
- Lost Ark is considered in Asia as the “most hotly anticipated new MMORPG” ever.
For us, an exceptional mix of styles: The special thing about the trailer from our western perspective is that at least three influences are recognizable, which partly exclude each other:
- This is a modern city look like from Cyberpunk 2077, with E-guitar playing cowboys in a neon city – a kind of neon steampunk
- Then there is a fantasy horror look with strange Asian demons apparently devouring whole hordes of children for breakfast – horror fantasy
- One recognizes a fairy-tale Asian martial arts world, in which women can run through the air with ribbons and sorceresses master the elements and epic fantasy battles with a grand backdrop – epic martial arts fantasy
What can be seen in the trailer? We see various heroes fighting demons and then embarking on a ship journey. These ship journeys to distant islands are likely an important part of Lost Ark.
The heroes likely represent the various classes in Lost Ark: There are 4 base classes in the new MMORPG, which then branch into 12 classes. In the video, we see a gunslinger (Devil Hunter), a sorceress, a warrior (Berserker), and a martial arts fighter (Infighter). There also seems to be a classic warrior.
The trailer ends in front of a fortress, apparently controlled by a demon summoner who manages from a safe distance. It is quite possible that the cinematic trailer sets the stage for the assault on the castle.
With a gameplay trailer that showed a fortress siege, Lost Ark captured attention long ago.
How do fans react to the trailer? By now, over 34,000 people have seen the trailer. It has about 580 likes.
In the western reddit, it is viewed critically. One says: Typical Korea. No gameplay, but as long as there is such a cinematic. All the money goes into that.
Many western fans are noticeably disheartened that a release in Europe for Lost Ark may still take a while.
There was no major information about a release in Europe during the media event, only that they are keeping an eye on the West release. Fans expect Lost Ark in the West at the earliest by 2020.
