The new MMORPG Lost Ark has just been released and there are already many users who want to compete with others. Apart from PvP, this is only possible with a DPS meter, but is there even one in Lost Ark?
Is there a DPS meter in Lost Ark? To that, we can give the very clear answer yes and no. While there is a way to check your DPS and even a sort of DPS meter, this opportunity does not exist in normal dungeons and raids.
Lost Ark relies on a training room, similar to the MMORPG Guild Wars 2, where you can keep track of your DPS, which is the damage you deal per second.
Outside of this room, however, there is no official DPS meter in the new MMORPG. There also seem to be no unofficial tools available at the moment, and even if there were, we strongly advise against using them.
How do you get into the training room? Once you have completed the main quest far enough to be able to play the song of Trixion, the training room and thus the DPS meter of Lost Ark will also be available to you. This is around level 30.
To enter and try it out, simply play the song that teleports you to Trixion. There you will then speak to the NPC Beatrice and tell her that you want to be taken to the practice ground.
There you can fiddle with all sorts of settings and change your skills, engravings, and so on. Afterwards, you can spawn bosses and regular monsters and fight against them.
A display on the right side of the screen also indicates how long your fight has been going on. It also shows how high your total weapon damage is, what your critical hit chance is, and how much damage per second you can deal.
Why do you need a DPS meter? In many MMORPGs, such measuring sticks are common to check how much damage individual group members are doing, thus better understanding why you might not be able to defeat a boss.
At the same time, it also serves to motivate each other and to boast about your own damage. This can lead to a “race” for the highest numbers, which naturally boosts not only the ego but also the overall damage of the group.
A DPS meter makes people toxic
Why is there no DPS meter in Lost Ark? This topic is hotly debated in many MMORPGs. Almost every game approaches it differently. While there is no official DPS meter in Guild Wars 2, addons for this are tacitly allowed.
Also, FFXIV does not have such a check built-in, but there are addons for it. These are also somewhat tolerated. However, talking about your own damage numbers or those of others is forbidden.
For the same reason, there is no such DPS meter or tool in Lost Ark that allows you to see your own damage or that of your teammates. The developers believe that it could lead to unhealthy competition and that the community would react more toxic as a result.
A hot topic in the community: Since the release of Lost Ark, players have been discussing whether there should be a DPS meter or not. The factions are roughly evenly divided on both sides.
While many fans believe that such a tool would help a competitive scene and could aid experienced players in improving further, some fans have an opposing view.
They argue that it is more than just damage numbers in Lost Ark. A DPS meter could lead to boss mechanics being ignored to stay at the top of the scoreboard. Furthermore, they fear that casual players could be disadvantaged just because of numbers.
