In Pokémon GO there are currently monsters with unusual designs. But this is not without reason.
What’s going on in Pokémon GO? The Ultra Beasts are out, more specifically: Muramura and Kopplosio. You can currently encounter these two monsters, depending on where you are in the world, in level 5 raids.
However, these two monsters are the ones causing question marks for some trainers. It is noticeable that they do not have a “typical” Pokémon design.
For example, a trainer posted in the Pokémon GO subreddit and emphasized that he hadn’t been involved with Pokémon since 2012.
However, he returned in March through Pokémon GO and loves many of the new monsters, but he calls Muramura “horrible” and says it looks like something “you would build in Minecraft.” Here we show you the post:
But not only Muramura, Kopplosio also draws attention. The “clown-with-exploding-head” monster was shared by a trainer on reddit, who received it as a PvP reward shortly after its release.
And although the post was supposed to be about the reward itself, there are several comments discussing its appearance.
There are comments like “What the hell is that?”, referring to Kopplosio as a fever-dream creature, or simply “I hate how that looks.” At the same time, there are also some players who celebrate the unusual design. They love the Ultra Beasts precisely because they look so crazy.
Regardless of whether one has a preference for the appearance of the monsters or not: they definitely stand out. And that is exactly what the creators intended.
Ultra Beasts: The scary monsters from another dimension
Why do they look like this? Muramura and Kopplosio are not regular Pokémon, but so-called Ultra Beasts. These monsters have been wreaking havoc in Pokémon GO since 2022 at irregular intervals, but they originally come from the “Sun” and “Moon” games.
They include:
- Anego
- Masskito
- Schabelle
- Voltriant
- Kaguron
- Katagami
- Schlinking
- Muramura
- Kopplosio
- Agoyon
- Venicro
All of them can now be obtained in Pokémon GO. What is special is that these monsters come from the Ultra Dimension and sometimes exhibit aggressive and parasitic behaviors.
They began their “invasion” into our world in 2022, which was accompanied by corresponding videos from Pokémon GO.
You can see Muramura in action here, for example:
Or here is the video of the lightning monster Voltriant:
Based on this behavior, the design was approached in a more unconventional way. In an interview surrounding the release of the Sun / Moon games in 2017, the creators of the game mentioned that they specifically focused on making design decisions with Ultra Beasts that are usually avoided with new Pokémon.
As examples, the director of the games, Shigeru Ohmori, mentioned combining “the soft texture of a jellyfish with glass or making something that normally looks small and weak – like a mosquito – super muscular. With these types of concepts, we were able to create Ultra Beasts that convey a completely different impression than previous Pokémon” (via pocketmonsters.net).
Accordingly, it’s no wonder that trainers who may have been out of the loop for a while stumble over the design. Because the alien Pokémon that invade the familiar world are not meant to look as friendly as most Pokémon do.
With the release of Agoyon, Kopplosio, and Muramura, all primary Ultra Beasts are now available in Pokémon GO. However, another important monster related to the Ultra Dimension is still to come this year: Necrozma will appear at the GO Fests and bring the ability to fuse into the game. You can read here how strong Necrozma will be in Pokémon GO.
