The LoL Worlds 2020 have ended for G2 Esports. DAMWON Gaming proved to be too strong in the League of Legends. The Koreans annihilated G2 in the last match in record time and imitated their celebration during the victory ceremony. The mid laner of DAMWON Gaming, Showmaker, got his revenge.
The situation before the match was: G2 Esports is considered the strongest team in the West, but they only had a mediocre group stage in the Worlds. In the quarter-finals, G2 confidently eliminated the Koreans from Gen G.
Despite a weak group stage, the Europeans insisted they were better than in 2019. Especially the mid laner Caps seemed to be in absolute top form in the quarter-finals, single-handedly destroying Gen G. with his Sylas.
In the semi-finals, G2 faced DAMWON Gaming, who had clearly defeated G2 at the Worlds in 2019. Therefore, G2 went into the match with confidence. However, DAMWON had shown hardly any weaknesses during the Worlds and was regarded before the start of the tournament as one of the 2 main favorites to become the world champion in League of Legends in 2020.
For DAMWON Gaming, the match against G2 was a personal affair. They desperately wanted revenge for their elimination at the Worlds 2019. The mid laner of DAMWON Gaming, Showmaker, had been talking for a year about getting revenge on G2 Esports. And he meant it seriously.
While the Europeans thought the semi-final was just a step towards the final against a Chinese team, it turned out to be a grand story of revenge for Showmaker, who fulfilled his wish after a year and dismantled G2.
This is how the match went: DAMWON Gaming won 3-1. The strengths were evident in the solo lanes:
- In the top lane, DAMWON Gaming has Nuguri, one of the best players in the world. The Dane Wunder had a hard time against him – except in match 2 when Nuguri played Fiora and catastrophically went 0-7-1.
- The real star of G2, Caps, who dazzled in the quarter-finals, shattered in the mid lane against Showmaker, whose Twisted Fate left him with little to offer.
After losing match 1, G2 Esports managed to make a significant statement by winning match 2 on the red side, which hadn’t happened against DAMWON Gaming in a long time. But that didn’t bring the hoped-for turnaround.
G2 Esports played match 2 at an elite level: They came in like heroes, but probably shot their load after this match.
In match 3, DAMWON Gaming already showed their superiority in the draft and secured the game safely.
The worst punishment came in match 4. It ended after 19 minutes. It is considered quite embarrassing in LoL to lose in under 20 minutes.
DAMWON Gaming didn’t allow the match to even go into the endgame and finished it after only 19 minutes at 15-2 kills.

That was bitter in the end: After the victory, DAMWON Gaming imitated the celebration of G2 Esports: They had threatened to throw Caps into the pool after their quarter-final victory.
DAMWON Gaming did that after the victory as well. The caster said: “They don’t just beat you, they steal your memes too.”
After the scene, some fans of G2 Esports were upset, feeling mocked.
DAMWON was simply a class above
This is how the match is seen: The head of G2 Esports clearly states: The better team won. Fans should now let DAMWON Gaming have their fun. Nobody wants to be a bad loser. Next year will continue.
Players like Jankos also say: They were simply too strong.
Even on reddit, people agree: It’s not so much that G2 Esports played particularly poorly here. DAMWON Gaming was just as good as everyone said beforehand. One person mentioned having flashbacks to “Brazil vs Germany” during the 2016 World Cup.
In the end, the favorite was much better than bookmakers and experts had thought before the start of the Worlds.
This is what it’s about: DAMWON failed against G2 Esports and the pressure of the World Championship in 2019. Back then, the team had endless potential but little international experience. They just couldn’t handle the pressure situation of the Worlds, while G2 seemed immune to pressure.
This experience has been gained by DAMWON over the last year, and their young key players Nuguri and Showmaker can now reliably call upon their class. That is too much for G2. Due to the “Corona atmosphere,” the pressure in 2019 wasn’t as strong as in 2020.
G2 Esports spent 2020 trying to maintain tension while being far superior to the national competition, changing roles in the team again and keeping spirits up. For the team, playing during the pandemic was a huge challenge, and they can be proud of their performance.
However, in direct comparison, DAMWON has improved significantly over the course of a year compared to G2. They have surpassed G2 in this one year.
In fact, there was some criticism of the stream’s casters during the series again. But it wasn’t as bad as during Fnatic’s elimination from the LoL Worlds 2020. Back then, it was said that the moderator had cursed the team:
