The former LoL pro Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong (29) is one of the most well-known players of League of Legends of all time. With Samsung Galaxy, the jungler became world champion in 2017 and was considered a major rival of Faker until his retirement in 2018. In December 2022, he is expected to have a son. The 29-year-old wants to name him after the champion in LoL with whom he became famous: Jarvan IV. His child is supposed to carry the name Jarvan V and be a true heir to the throne.
Who is this?
- Ambition began his professional career in LoL in 2011, pretty much at the start of League of Legends.
- The pinnacle of his career was reached in 2017: he married Solji Maeng, a woman from the LoL scene, and became world champion with his team, Samsung Galaxy. In the final, in November 2017, they defeated the favored T1 and Faker, who had previously won 3 world championships in 4 years. The stoic Faker cried after the defeat – it still weighs on him to this day.
- Ambition ended his career in 2018 and has since been a streamer for Gen G., the arch-rival of T1.
Riot Games is fantastic at presenting LoL:
Ambition wants to raise his son to be the heir to the throne in LoL
This is what he says now: Ambition has reportedly stated in his stream that he wants to name his son Jarvan V, according to a Korean website. The birth of the child is expected in mid to late December.
He says he plans to create a LoL duo with his son and then become “Challenger Dad”.
By naming his son Jarvan the Fifth, he apparently wants to ensure that the line of succession in the monarchy remains intact.
With his wife came the big success for Ambition
What’s up with the Wife Buff? When Ambition married in 2017, it was unusual for a LoL player, as they are usually always single. Players until then had taken the ascetic superstar Faker as an example, whose life revolves solely around LoL and who is known to play LoL in his free time to unwind from the stress of playing LoL all day long for work.
For years, the saying for aspiring professionals in LoL was: “As long as Faker has no girlfriend, I won’t have one either.”
But when Ambition got married, something strange happened: he suddenly played much better and even became world champion.
Since then, there has been a legend in LoL about the “Wife Buff”, which states that a player who gets married is now “buffed”, meaning he plays much stronger than before:
- This Wife Buff was recently attributed to the German player Upset, who suddenly played the best LoL of his life after his marriage.
- Fans in LoL are totally fascinated by professionals who are married: This could also be observed with “Super-Carry” Doinb.
How are the two doing? After the end of his professional career, Ambition continued to play LoL as a streamer. While he was feared as a pro for his rough manner and poker face, he appeared much more relaxed and friendly as a streamer than before.
He referred to his wife as “Lady Nashor”, naming her after the fearsome Baron who rules over the LoL map, as a sign of who wears the pants in their household (via reddit).
Lead character in LoL video with more than 313 million views
What’s up with Jarvan? Ambition’s signature champion, his trademark hero, was Jarvan IV, “the exemplar of Demacia”: a royal tank with an iconic spear. He is known for driving this spear into the ground and thus creating a dueling circle from which the opponent cannot escape.
In LoL’s history, special players have always been associated with the champion they were particularly good with or achieved something special:
- Supporter Mata is regarded as “the” Thresh player
- Tian has been associated with “Lee Sin” since Worlds 2019
- for Ambition, the signature champion since 2017 has been Jarvan IV
He also chose Jarvan as his personal Worlds skin.
Where else do we know Ambition from?
- In the music video Rise, which stylizes the 2017 World Championship, the final battle takes place between Faker and Ambition, who wields Jarvan’s spear.
- “Rise” has now surpassed 313 million views.
- Ambition plays the lead character there as a world champion.
