On December 10th, the beta for Wild Rift, the standalone version of League of Legends, will start. It has only been released for Android and iOS so far, but it is also expected to come to consoles. In an interview with MeinMMO, the developers revealed that the release will still take some time.
Who can currently play Wild Rift? With the start of the open beta on December 10, 2020, the twin-stick MOBA from the League of Legends universe is available in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in Germany.
The launch in Germany has been long awaited, as some countries in Asia have already been participating in the beta since July 2020. In the USA, players still have to wait until 2021.
However, there is currently no version for consoles.
Riot Games comments on the Wild Rift console version
What does Riot say? We were invited by Riot Games in advance to test Wild Rift, and our editor Alexander Leitsch is very enthusiastic. In this context, we also spoke with the developers of Riot Games. They confirmed to us that work is still being done on the console version.
However, there are currently no major updates that can be shared with the players. More information is expected in 2021.
Why console players can’t play Wild Rift yet: Wild Rift was announced as a standalone game in the League of Legends universe after three years of development in October 2019.
With the announcement of the mobile version, a console version of Wild Rift for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch was promised. However, unlike the mobile version, no release date was mentioned.
What to expect in Wild Rift: The standalone version of League of Legends for smartphones and consoles is expected to differ in some aspects from the PC version:
- An adapted twin-stick control scheme.
- Shorter matches that are expected to last only 15 to 18 minutes.
- New animations and models.
- Additionally, a different champion pool is expected.
When will Wild Rift be released for PS4, Xbox, and Switch? Riot Games has indicated a release on consoles will be possible at the earliest after the beta has ended. The MOBA is expected to leave beta in 2021 and be available worldwide for all mobile users. Console players will need to be patient for a little longer.
