League of Legends lifted the limit for account levels in 2017. Since then, players can increase their level through any activity in the game. This particularly benefits new players, as each level-up brings a reward. However, the veterans of the game are not satisfied.
What is the current status of the reward system? League of Legends distributes certain rewards to players after a level-up in the form of a capsule system.
- Up to level 30, players receive champion shards upon leveling up, which corresponds to a certain value.
- After level 30, players receive a champion capsule with a random champion shard for each level.
- Every 10th level awards a glorious champion capsule instead of the normal champion capsules.
- Additionally, there are milestones with special rewards every 25 levels after level 50.
- Furthermore, the developer distributes additional capsules during certain events, such as the Worlds.

What the system offers newcomers: This system brings only benefits for new players. They can obtain champions from all price ranges through the rewards up to level 30. Additionally, purchasing champions by redeeming champion shards is significantly cheaper than acquiring the character normally in the shop.
This helps new players quickly acquire their favorite characters from the game. They can exchange the champion shards for blue essences and then purchase the desired champion in the shop or hope to snag one champion shard from over 160 different options.
This way, new players quickly get enough champions to participate in ranked games or have a flexible selection in the ARAM game mode.
What do the veterans get from this system? After Riot Games revamped the level system in 2017, players could continue to level up with their accounts. However, long-time players found that this eventually lost its charm.
This raised the question of why one would need the champion capsule rewards when they already own all characters and can earn blue essences, the in-game currency, just by playing.
Riot Games then responded with champion championships. Instead of spending blue essences for mastery level 6 on a champion, players could use their champion shards for that. But first, they need to acquire them.
A player wrote on reddit: “I spent 3 years trying to get Jarvan.”
Another person commented on the question of what to do with over 200,000 blue essences: “I can just change my name every 2 weeks (via reddit).”
Many veteran players wish for the return of the Essence Emporium, where certain skins for champions or wards and icons for the account could be purchased. However, Riot Games has postponed that indefinitely since patch 12.12.
