In the US League of League of Legends, the LCS, mysterious things are happening once again. The current champion Cloud9 has benched the AD Carry Zven and assigned him to the “Academy Team”. Zven is considered the player who has contributed the most to Cloud9. Other professionals are puzzled by this move: Apparently, there were serious internal issues. Cloud9’s poor performance at MSI 2021 may have led to conflicts internally.
This is the situation:
- The 23-year-old Dane Jesper “Zven” Svenningen has made a name for himself in Europe six years ago in LoL, playing for Origen and G2 Esports. After that, he spent two years as an expensive EU import at TSM, leading a pretty dull but financially rewarding existence before flourishing as the AD Carry for Cloud9 in recent years, bringing the team to the championship title twice.
- After an outstanding Spring Split, but a weak MSI tournament Zven was benched on May 29 and is now playing for Cloud9’s “Academy Team”. Instead of him, Cloud9 has now brought in the Australian “K1ng”. He is also 23 years old, not exactly a long-term investment, and appears to be less skilled than Zven, who is considered the best AD Carry in the USA.
- A team member from Cloud9 said Zven is on the bench to “improve the atmosphere in the team.” No one can really understand what has happened. LoL players are now speculating about the reasons.
“Zven probably won’t play this summer anymore”
This fuels speculation: In a recent talk, the strategy coach of Cloud9 (via youtube): He does not expect Zven to play this summer anymore. Max Waldo does not provide exact reasons but smiles and says: “It’s not about Zven’s work ethic.”
The top laner of Cloud9, Fudge, who is also in the interview, reacts a little surprised. He says he is not so sure that Zven will not play this summer anymore.
North America simply doesn’t care about winning in LoL
Why is he on the bench? Other professionals are currently speculating about this. The excellent jungler Selfmade believes:
What is happening in North America, with benching Zven and Aphari, simply shows that NA doesn’t give a damn about winning. I don’t even care what they did. I just assume they were kicked for being toxic. But they must have had good reasons for it.
Zven probably told his jungler that he played like dog shit – and he was right about that. But you don’t replace someone for that. It’s crazy.
Selfmade
Did Zven flame his jungler hard?
Many seem to agree with Selfmade’s theory: Zven is considered ambitious and Cloud9’s early exit at MSI 2021 was disappointing for everyone, certainly also for Zven.
The jungler of Cloud9, Blaber (21), did not make a good impression at MSI, as Selfmade also notes: Blaber seems to be clearly the weakest link in Cloud9’s chain.
It was Blaber who said in an interview (via youtube): Cloud9 benched Zven to improve the atmosphere. However, Blaber did not want to reveal much more.
Reddit users suspect that the situation could have escalated internally during or after MSI, and that Zven could have lost control and flamed other team members, possibly Blaber, intensely. It’s hard to explain the situation as to why Cloud9 benches Zven.
