The best European team in e-sports in League of Legends is G2 Esports. The team from Berlin has now announced its roster for 2024. They lived up to their reputation as masterful trolls in LoL: It seemed that their star player Caps would be leaving the team.
This is G2:
- The G2 team was outstandingly the champion in the Summer Split 2023 of the LEC. It was already the 12th victory in a season: Since Spring 2016, G2 Esports has been champion 12 times in 18 occasions.
- In the 2023 season alone, G2 E-Sports won the Winter and Summer Split, and also the finals in Montpellier.
- Despite all this success: Internationally, it’s currently not going well at all. At the Worlds, G2 was eliminated in the group stage – embarrassingly, they even lost to a team from the USA. They are far from the successes like the World Championship finals participation in 2019.
The anthem of the LoL Worlds 2023 was not a good soundtrack for G2 this time:
“Farewell, Caps”
That was the roster announcement: In a video on YouTube and Twitter “Farewell, Caps”, the midlaner and star of the team, Caps, was seen sitting in front of the camera, visibly affected, announcing his departure. He would be getting on a plane and leaving Berlin.
However, those who know G2 already suspected that it was a fake. Ultimately, Caps only announced that he was flying home during the league break for a vacation. In 2024, they would return with the current roster to try again.
The bluff that he would leave was credible because his old teammates from the 2019 G2 are gathering again in Spain.
In the comments, many G2 fans wrote that they initially had a panic attack until Caps finally revealed the bluff.
E-sports reporter Ashley Kang had a particularly warm greeting for G2:

- The German BrokenBlade (23) remains on the top lane. He previously played 1 year at Schalke and 2 years at TSM.
- The jungler Yike (22) from Sweden remains in the team.
- Caps (23) will try again in 2024 to lead the team forward: He has now been with G2 for 5 years.
- ADC Hans Same is entering his 2nd year with the team.
- Supporter Mikyx has been with G2 since 2018, like Caps, but was away for 1 year before Hans Sama brought him back to the team.
