In League of Legends there is a commotion about the European top team Fnatic. They signed the Frenchman Adam “Adam” Maanane (19) in 2021, who had a strong season and won the award for best rookie in Europe in 2021. However, at the Worlds 2021, there apparently was so much trouble with the German botlaner Upset that Adam has now left the team.
This was the situation at Fnatic:
- 2021 did not go well for Fnatic until drastic measures were taken to salvage the season. In May 2021, they signed the only 19-year-old Adam placed him in the top lane and moved the original top laner Bwipo to the jungle. Adam won the award for “Rookie of the Year in Summer 2021”.
- Adam had a strong season and Fnatic managed to qualify for the Worlds. However, at the Worlds, botlaner Upset left before the first match . Without the German, Fnatic was eliminated 1-5.
- After the Worlds, Adam surprisingly announced that he was leaving Fnatic. Now it is clear: This happened out of frustration over Upset’s behavior.
19-year-old feels Fnatic’s behavior is “betrayal”
Why is Adam gone? The Frenchman makes it clear on Twitter: His surprising departure from Fnatic is now solely his decision.
He was especially frustrated that Upset left the team without giving reasons. As far as Adam knows, Upset only left because his girlfriend was feeling alone and bad.
In the aftermath of the Worlds, Upset also allegedly tried to push him out of the team and instead sign the experienced top laner Alphari. Anyway, Upset is planning to change the entire top side of the map, which means mid laner Nisqy would also have to go.
When Adam heard that Fnatic wanted to replace him, it felt like betrayal to him. Adam says he sought a conversation with Upset, who made him feel that he would not meet his expectations.
Adam thinks he played a very important role in Fnatic’s success and is apparently now angry that as a rookie he has no say. In farewell, Adam explains that he has many good memories of Fnatic but will leave the team because he cannot endorse what has happened.

What does Upset say? The German Elias “Upset” Lipp (21) comments on Adam’s accusations (via twitter). He feels misrepresented, he informed the coach Yamato about the reasons for his departure at the Worlds, but not the others. He did not want to make himself or his family vulnerable, as he knows how quickly things circulate on the internet and that some were just waiting to hurt others.
His wife would never ask him to leave the Worlds. When people say such things about his wife, it hurts him especially. People who attack his wife based on assumptions, without having insights, are the worst.
The claim that he only told his team before leaving that his wife was feeling bad is a blatant lie.
He informed the team of the deep pain he was feeling.
Regarding the matter with Alphari, Upset says: He is a former teammate and friend of his. Alphari asked to speak with Upset after the first contact with Fnatic. But the team makes the decision on who to sign. Fnatic only asked him for feedback.
Of course, he wants to surround himself with players that he believes form the best team. He is as transparent as possible about it.
Upset explicitly did not want to comment on the collaboration with Adam.
