In League of Legends , there was a bizarre situation with the European team Fnatic. They had two world-class ADCs on the team but played a terrible season. For the Swede, Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, it was an untenable situation: He was afraid of being replaced by the German Upset if he faltered. Now, Fnatic is resolving the situation: Upset is apparently going to Team Vitality.
This was the situation:
- For years, Rekkles played for Fnatic, was the main ADC there, and became one of the most important figures in European League of Legends; he became a legend. But then the Swede moved to G2 – Fnatic replaced him with the German player Upset, who led the team for 2 years.
- Last season, however, Rekkles returned to Fnatic, and Upset was benched.
- But without the German, things did not go well for Fnatic; they played an extremely weak season, finishing disastrously in second to last place.
Strong substitute player unsettles Rekkles – Demands clarity
This is what Rekkles said now: The Swede Rekkles recently made it clear in a Twitch stream that the situation with Upset does not work for him:
According to Rekkles, there were uncertainties throughout the season; no one was really sure of their position. He always felt Upset breathing down his neck.
After the season, the situation became even more difficult:
- According to Rekkles, Fnatic made contact with Upset to see if he would come back to the roster.
- An expert suggested that Upset should become the main ADC again, and Rekkles could play as a “range supporter” (via dotesports).
Rekkles says: The situation with Upset was difficult for him. As long as Upset was there, Rekkles felt: if something went wrong, he would be benched and Upset would play. When he heard that Fnatic was talking to Upset, it hit him:
This caught me off guard, even though it makes sense; the guy is damn good. I told Fnatic that I needed a promise that Upset would not play for them in 2023, because otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for me to commit here… They then gave me the promise, which is why I felt so empty [when he heard they were talking to Upset]. I wasn’t sad or angry; I just felt empty.
Rekkles explained that it was already a strange situation for Upset to be on the bench because he is just so “fucking good”.
Upset is apparently switching to Team Vitality
This happened immediately after: After Rekkles expressed his concerns in a stream about how it felt to have Upset breathing down his neck, the situation resolved.
- An insider report surfaced that Upset is switching to Team Vitality for the next split, to Perkz’s team.
- Upset has already posted a “bee” as confirmation.
The current ADC of Team Vitality, Neon, meanwhile asks his teammate Selfmade how it feels to be on the bench. “Cold and it wears you down,” writes Selfmade. He too had been replaced at Team Vitality.
It looks like Upset will soon be playing alongside the other big legend in European LoL, Perkz. Last year, things went only mediocre for them:
