The supermarket chain Kaufland has established its own esports team for League of Legends. The team “Kaufland Hangry Knights” will compete in the 4th German league, but is expected to play in the first league in the future. There is a lot of support for the players.
What kind of team is this?
- In November 2021, Kaufland sought LoL players who want to compete for their esports team.
- Out of over 500 applicants, they have now selected five players who will compete for Kaufland Hangry Knights.
- They will play in the Prime League Division 4, which is similar to the fourth German-speaking league.
- However, in the long run, the team aims to play in the first league. There they would meet Eintracht Spandau, the new team of HandOfBlood. To make this happen, there is a lot of support for the players.
Own gaming house and scholarship for the players
How does Kaufland support the team? The new esports team is set to move into its own team house in Berlin in the coming weeks. From there, the players will participate in tournaments, leagues, and livestreams.
Presences on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are also planned.
Accommodation in the house is free for the players. They also receive a fixed monthly salary through the “E-Sports scholarship,” as Kaufland announced in a press release.
Who will compete for the team in the future? The players of Kaufland Hangry Knights are:
- Benjamin “Crowno” Micic – Toplane
- Jan “Sevenarmy” Fragstein – Jungler
- Paul “Paul227” Gurisch – Midlane
- Yannick “Missclick” Hiller – Botlane
- Simon “Flay” Menne – Support
Four of them have already played in the second division of the Prime League and thus have the potential to compete in the first league in the future as well. After all, that is the goal of Kaufland Hangry Knights. Paul227 has only played in the third league so far according to our information. However, all players are tournament-experienced.
Kaufland is by no means the first major brand in LoL esports
Who else is represented in esports? Kaufland has offered an interesting arrangement to the players with the gaming house and the scholarship, but is by no means the only major brand in the various German leagues in LoL:
- In the first league, there is the team E WIE EINFACH E-SPORTS, which is supported by the power supplier
- In the second league, there is the event agency Cowana as a team sponsor
- In both leagues, there are football teams like Schalke 04, Eintracht Frankfurt, or Hertha BSC, which have also not started out as traditional esports organizations
One of the most well-known German supermarkets also became a new sponsor for a German team from the LEC in 2021:
