A LoL (League of Legends)-MMO is probably not completely off the table just yet. The enthusiasm of the fans surprised the developers, who spoke about new ideas in an interview. Riot Games seems to be keeping all options open.
What happened? A tweet from Riot Games’ Marc Merrill recently toyed with the hearts of players. He asked whether fans would want an MMO. A huge hype arose among the fans.
Later, a LoL employee explained that this was just a kind of survey and that nothing concrete is planned. It was a thought experiment.
But the topic remains hot: In an interview, the LoL founder revisited the upcoming titles of the studio and the question of the MMO.
Is a LoL-MMO still coming?
Interactive map was the trigger: The question about a LoL-MMO came from Merrill after Riot Games released an interactive map of the LoL world “Runeterra”. Here players can explore the areas and lore of LoL online.
Surprised by the fans’ reactions: The introduction of the interactive LoL map was the perfect opportunity to ask the community for their opinions on an MMO, as Merrill explained in an interview with the US site Variety. The reaction and interest of the players was, however, a surprise for the studio.
When directly asked if Riot Games is currently working on an MMORPG, Merrill only gave evasive answers.
The question that is really interesting and relevant is: What does the future of MMOs look like? I think we have a perspective, others have a perspective, the players have a perspective. World of Warcraft remains a dominant game.
There are good reasons why it might not be the best decision to compete with WoW, but who knows. We’re exploring a lot of things and thinking about many things.
