From time to time, there are new game modes in League of Legends that try to provide variety alongside the familiar MOBA gameplay. Last year, there was Arena and this year there is Swarm, a mode inspired by a Steam hit.
What do you do in Swarm?
- Swarm is the new PvE mode that will be available on the live servers on July 17.
- You will fight against hordes of monsters, sometimes against bosses, with up to four friends.
- The game is reminiscent of Steam hits like Vampire Survivors or Brotato with its upgrade system and gameplay.
- The champions and the visual design are based on the Anima Squad skin series, for which new champions will receive skins as part of the event, including Aurora.
- Previous Anima Squad champions are also expected to be in the playable champion pool.
After the Arena mode, Swarm is the next new mode that brings back PvE after a long time. The last PvE mode was released in 2018 in the form of Odyssey: Extraction. The unique thing about the movement in this mode is that you can only move with WASD instead of using the mouse.

We have essentially developed a brand new game
In a Reddit post, players are reacting to the new mode and most are positive about it. In the comments, we even get more insights into the mode itself. When the user FreezingVenezuelan says the mode is a sort of side-game alongside classic LoL, a staff member from Riot actually responds to him.
From a technical standpoint, that’s more true than you can imagine 😀 We have essentially developed a brand new game in the League engine, new controls, new design, new basic AI, etc. This is definitely a bold bet!

I love games in the style of Vampire Survivors/Holocure, so I’m very excited about this game.
In the comments on the Reddit post, there is additional information from Riot employees. They implemented the controls on WASD because the mode would not work properly otherwise. Additionally, Swarm is supposed to be playable only as a limited mode initially, not permanently. What do you think of the new mode? Are you excited about it or not interested in such things?
