League of Legends has displayed one problem after another since the start of the season. However, the developers at Riot Games have engaged in dialogue with players. Through clear communication and openness, they are paving the way for the future.
What kind of crisis is it? At the beginning of Season 13 of League of Legends, Riot Games disappointed its players time and again. The developers had to explain why LoL is currently struggling at the start of Season 13. Many employees are said to have left, leading to several issues:
- League of Legends has lost its status as a “flagship” and players have even described it as if LoL has been put into maintenance mode.
- Since 2018, Riot Games has released a new cinematic video at the start of each season. This year, Riot Games disappointed many fans with the video. Check it out for yourselves:
- Moreover, the end of the season and the winter period in League of Legends did not receive the deserved attention, unlike in previous years. The winter map of LoL has never reached the Rift.
- Throughout 2022, only 5 new champions were released. The promised Ixtal and Darkin characters have been postponed to the next year.
- Additionally, several champion reworks and adjustments were also postponed. This includes Ahri and Lux. The last reworked champion is Aurelion Sol, yet he is plagued by bugs.
Nevertheless, League of Legends remains a huge topic:
Communication is the key to success
What has Riot Games done about it? Riot Games initially tried to clarify the situation with explanations on Twitter. However, they received almost only negative responses:
The developers of League of Legends had a tough start to the season. They even deleted the last patch and reset the entire game to the state of the beginning of the year. However, it only took about a month and a half since the start of the season for them to get back on track.
When a solution was not clear for a long time, they addressed the community with a video (via Twitter). In addition, they published several situation reports and developer blogs on the LoL site. In these, they also announced a new mode for LoL.
Furthermore, the developers have been active in the reddit forums. There, they answered questions about the new mode and other upcoming changes, and received positive feedback for it.
What does the community think about it? Players show understanding for the developers who are currently going through a tough time. They can also communicate with the developers and their ideas are being heard (via reddit).
On YouTube, the user “Juliën van der Niet” commented: “This sounds much more honest than a content production-oriented presentation. Please keep it up.” Other users also support Riot Games’ approach.
With this approach to the community, Riot Games has apparently found a method that is positively received by players. The exchange and “laying the cards on the table” seem to be a good strategy to confront the crisis.
What do you think of the path that Riot has recently taken? If you have ideas or comments about League of Legends, please share them in the comments.
