The LoL player Martin “Wunder” Hansen (22) is considered one of the greatest talents in European League of Legends, but his passion for World of Warcraft seems to be getting in his way. After a painful defeat, the top laner of G2 Esports has now promised to train harder. First step: He has uninstalled WoW.
What’s the deal with Wunder and WoW? The 22-year-old Dane makes his living with LoL but has been addicted to World of Warcraft for years. Wunder is known for his love of Blizzard’s MMORPG.
In professional LoL matches, he often urges his team, G2, to “wrap it up quickly” because his raid in WoW is waiting for him. This has become a running gag; when G2 quickly finishes a series with 3-0, it’s said behind the scenes: Wunder must have a raid.
His passion for WoW is well documented: In 2019, his team was fined $1,000 by Riot Games. Wunder was simply playing WoW Classic during an official live stream of LoL. Riot Games did not find that funny.
G2 thanked Riot back then: Finally, they had a good excuse to ban Wunder from playing WoW.
Wunder loses important game in LoL, then deletes WoW
This is the defeat: Wunder plays for the European top team G2. This is nominally the strongest team in League of Legends by far, especially since they snatched the best players from the direct competitor Fnatic, Caps and Rekkles.
But G2 is inconsistent: In the playoffs, they lost an important series against the rival Mad Lions 1-3. Suddenly, Wunder proved to be a weak point: He fell short against the Turkish pro Irfan “Armut” Berk Türkek on the top lane. In the series, Wunder died 20 times in 4 games and only secured 8 kills.
G2 has slipped into the “loser bracket” due to the defeat and now must win everything to still become the champion in the Spring Season of the LEC 2021.
This is Wunder’s promise: After the defeat, Wunder merely tweeted: “Okay, I am uninstalling WoW now.” One could take that for one of the typical jokes for which Wunder is known.
However, his behavior clearly shows that he took it seriously: As DotEsports reports (via DotEsports.com), Wunder played 26 solo games in LoL in the last 3 days and won 17 of them. He is now seriously training his mechanics.
Prior to that, he hardly played privately and only completed 94 solo games, while his colleagues Caps and Rekkles had managed five times as many solo games in the same time.
Wunder has also changed his username to “NoWoWFreeWin” – the defeat seems to have motivated him to play the game he actually makes money from more.
The next top laner Wunder faces may encounter a new Wunder. G2 faces Rogue in the semifinals of the playoffs, who just knocked out Schalke 04.
Wunder is a man with clear opinions. He embodies the “For the Lulz” culture of G2 Esports like hardly anyone else. Once, he caught attention for complaining about the official League of Legends chairs and sounded far from diplomatic:
Bad advertising: LoL pro complains about “fucking shit” official chairs
