At the start of the new Season 11 in League of Legends, there was a large announcement event. During this event, the upcoming champions for 2021 were introduced, including Viego, who will appear in just a few weeks.
What new champions are there? Throughout 2021, it is expected that, like the previous year, 6 new champions will be released. One champion will be released for each position and an additional champion for the mid lane, where assassins and mages will find their place.
The first new champion is expected to land on the PBE test environment in just about 2 weeks. This champion is Viego, the Fallen King (featured image).
Most of you will probably know and have already purchased his weapon, the Blade of the Ruined King. He is set to be released with Patch 11.2, and his abilities are already known.
What do we know about the other champions? Besides Viego, there are expected to be three more champions connected with him. However, only a few details have been shared about these:
- The second champion for 2021 is expected to be a magical fighter for the top lane. Thematically, this champion will be related to “tailoring and clothing”.
- The following champion will be an artillery mage in the mid lane. This champion is expected to avoid crazy jumps or much action, instead returning a bit to the roots. On reddit, it is speculated that this will be Norra, a Yordle and Yuumi’s master. This fits into the current story as he has set out to the Shadow Isles with pages from Yuumi’s book.
- Champion number 4 will be another AD carry. This one is set to break traditions, similar to Senna, and have an unusual playstyle. However, the specifics of this are currently unknown.
In addition to the new champions, updates to older champions are also planned. Soon, the promised update for Dr. Mundo will arrive, along with a vote where you can vote on the next major rework.
Viego sounds like a strong assassin
Riot Games released the new champion’s skills online shortly after the announcement. Viego seems to be becoming a new assassin and has an interesting passive ability that allows him to take control of enemy champions:
- Passive Ability – Ruler’s Dominance: Viego can temporarily possess enemy champions he was involved in killing, healing himself for a portion of their maximum health. While possessing another champion, Viego gains their same items, attacks, and abilities (excluding the ultimate ability), and can cast his own ultimate ability, Heartbreaker, once for free. Additionally, Viego’s movement speed increases when approaching enemy champions.
- Q – Blade of the Fallen King – Passive: Viego’s attacks deal a percentage of the target’s current health as extra damage upon a hit. If Viego attacks an enemy he recently hit with an ability, he executes that attack twice. The second strike siphons life from the target instead of dealing normal damage, but it still triggers hit effects and can critically strike. This passive ability remains in effect when Viego possesses another champion. Active: Viego lunges forward with his blade, dealing damage to all enemies hit.
- W – Spectral Maw: Viego charges up, jumps forward, and unleashes a mist strike that stuns the first enemy hit and deals damage. The stun duration and range of the mist increase with charge time, while damage and jump distance do not.
- E – Path of Torment: Viego creates a wave of black mist that spreads around a nearby wall. While in the mist, Viego becomes camouflaged and gains attack and movement speed.
- R – Heartbreaker: Viego abandons all corpses he currently possesses and teleports forward to attack the enemy champion with the lowest percentage health in his range, dealing additional damage based on their missing health. Other enemies in range are knocked back.

As part of the event, Riot Games also discussed its other games:
- The new LoL Wild Rift is set to receive the ARAM mode and 2 new champions each month
- An official tournament series is planned for the card game Legends of Runeterra
- The Auto Chess TFT, on the other hand, will receive Set 5 and 6 and a Turbo mode in 2021.
All of these changes fit into the concept of LoL, which can now showcase several successful spin-offs.
In addition to the new in-game season, the e-sports scene in LoL is also entering a new round. Many eyes are especially on the American LCS, as it has changed its format:
