In League of Legends, there is not only your own account level or the rank in the ranked mode. Players who play a lot also level up the so-called mastery rank with individual champions. However, many players believe that an update in 2024 has devalued the entire system.
What is it about? For a long time, League of Legends only had two systems where progress could be displayed. On one hand, there was the player level, which used to stop at level 30, and on the other, there was the rank in the leaderboard.
The mastery system was introduced in 2015. It was a new system that displayed your progress with individual champions. With each champion, you could reach 7 levels. Up to level 5, you simply had to play a certain amount of time with the champion.
For level 6, you had to achieve at least two S-ranks. Then you received tokens with which you could upgrade your champion rank using blue essences or the specific champion shards. The same applies to level 7, but for that, you needed 3 tokens, which you earned through an S-rank in a match.
Apart from the rank, you also had mastery points that you could essentially increase infinitely. But Riot changed the system in March 2024.
It’s just irrelevant
This year, however, the system was changed. The 7 mastery levels no longer existed, and you could infinitely increase the level of a champion simply by increasing mastery points, which can be done by mindless playing – regardless of how well you play.
Upon release, the update of the feature was criticized. Many players found it ugly. And even today, the new system doesn’t seem to have gained many fans. In a current thread on reddit, a player complains that the new system is simply irrelevant
.
The user Awkward-Presence1249 complains in his thread that Riot shot themselves in the foot with the new system. According to him, reaching mastery level 7 was the final challenge of a journey
. Now, that’s no longer the case. The new system is irrelevant
and nobody cares.
His thread is receiving significant support. Currently, the thread has over 4400 upvotes and over 400 comments. Many agree with the thread creator:

I miss mastery 7 so much. It actually felt like an achievement and something to strive for.
- MrSfaxiano:
Not to mention the awful appearance of mastery in the game, literally nobody flaunts their mastery anymore, it looks very ugly.
However, there are also critical voices questioning the purpose of the old system. It had no significance before:
- Kicin0_0:
Level 7 never meant anything. I had level 7 on champs that I had no idea how to play, just because I had a few lucky games with them.
- Dr.BitterBlossom:
Level 7 never meant anything. It was not about skill, but rather just a waste of time.
What do you think about it? Do you care about the ranks of other players, or do you ignore it? Let us know in the comments. Currently, the Worlds 2024 is the big topic in League of Legends. As a regular player, you can observe a really high level of play: Fans have been marveling at 20 seconds of pure action in LoL at the highest level for days.
