What is going on in League of Legends? Riot Games has announced a summer event for LoL: “Sentinels of Light”. The event starts on July 8. Everything that happens in the event is meant to become part of the story of LoL. Therefore, all skins and cosmetics coming with the new event are supposed to impact the lore of LoL and the worlds of other games in the LoL universe.
“Sentinels of Light” is an order that protects the world from the undead forces of the “Shadow Isles”.
In the upcoming event:
- Rengar, Pyke, and Graves will join the Sentinels of Light
- The “Dark Side” will be reinforced by Miss Fortune and Thresh
In practical terms for LoL, it means new skins are coming for these 5 champions. Riot Games has already shown the skins.
This is the discussion around Thresh: With the new skins, the skin of “Unbound Thresh” seems somewhat confusing to some.
Because Thresh, the Chain Warden is actually an “undead monster” in LoL, who has a burning skull as his face. Thresh is portrayed in the lore of LoL as “cunning and ambitious, a restless spirit”.
In his new look, he proudly shows off a six-pack, walks around with an attractive face, and looks quite sexy.
This unsettles some fans.
Thresh represents the banality of evil – he must not be cool!
As one user on TikTok says: It makes no sense at all. Thresh is a creepy, obsessed, and narcissistic guy who meticulously ensures he gets what he deserves and who wants to take revenge on everyone for even the slightest injustice. Moreover, he is probably a serial killer. But the most important thing about him is: He is not cool. He is evil, but nothing special. The evil is banal.
This would essentially be a very normal guy who only becomes interesting because an interesting villain accidentally turned him into a monster.
If Thresh is now transformed into a “sexy e-boy”, that would be a betrayal of the character. Even if Thresh had the ability to project his appearance onto himself, something embarrassing would come out of it, since his soul is so petty, but the new skin makes Thresh appear as cool as he sees himself. That can’t be.
Another user argues from a different angle: He thinks that if you take away Thresh’s cool glowing skull and cloak, you simply make him less sexy:
Also on reddit, the skin is seen rather critically (via reddit). The lore contains a picture of Thresh before his transformation: He looked absolutely normal and inconspicuous. Why Riot depicts him this way now is incomprehensible to many.
The new skin seems like an insider joke from Riot Games: Players wish for more “love for the monsters”, more from Rek’Sai, Cho’Gath, Trundle, and Fiddlesticks, and instead, Riot Games makes one of the monsters like Thresh into a “sexy guy”.
Apparently, however, Thresh’s “ghost version” is so iconic and popular that the “sexy version” does not have many fans.
