In League of Legends, the prediction game “Pick’em” takes place. Players can guess how the LoL Worlds 2021 will go. More than 7.4 million players have submitted their predictions, only one correct before the final.
What kind of event is this?
- In the WM prediction “Pick’em”, players can bet from September 26th to October 5th on how the pros will perform at the LoL Worlds 2021. They can guess who will win the group matches and the knockout games.
- As a reward for good performance or even just participating in the contest, there are currencies in LoL, specific loot boxes, and other rewards.
- For the “perfect prediction,” however, there is a special reward: all 6 ultimate skins are waiting for the winners.
Only 0.000014% of all predictions correct
This is how the perfect prediction looks in 2021:
- At Worlds 2020, 11 people out of over 8 million participants had a perfect prediction
- Before the final of Worlds 2021, only one remains who has correctly predicted all group matches and knockout games so far. He currently has the maximum score of 104 and thus holds the rank “Baron Nashor.” The one perfect player represents 0.00014 percent of all predictions submitted.
Compared to earlier, many more people are participating in the prediction game in LoL today: 3.8 million predicted at LoL Worlds 2018 – Only one was correct
How is it overall at the Worlds? Only one other player is found in the second-highest rank “Ancestor Dragon.” He has secured 99 out of 104 points.
Most players, about 5 million, are in the “Elder Cup” range, having collected a little less than half of the possible points.
Early elimination of favorites ruins many players’ bets
Why did so few predict the Worlds correctly? There were some surprises at the Worlds 2021. The biggest surprise was probably that the Chinese stars of FunPlus Phoenix were eliminated in the preliminary round and that Cloud 9 managed to progress. Hardly anyone expected that.
That Fnatic fell apart already in the group phase because the most important player Upset had to leave for family reasons, was also not something that many had considered on their prediction slip. Particularly since Fnatic was able to secure their only win against the strongest of the group.
That Korea would be strong was anticipated before the start of the tournament, but that even the fourth-best team, the “Church of Chovy”, made it to the quarter-finals was hard to foresee.
As “over-performers,” EDward Gaming could also be considered, as they were not rated as strong as FunPlus Phoenix and Royal Never Give Up as a Chinese team, yet they are now in the final.
That DWG KIA made it to the final, on the other hand, was no great surprise. The overall mediocre performance of teams from Europe and North America was somewhat expected, though the reality did catch many off guard:
