The Star Guardian Event 2022 brings back a popular anime-style skin line. To promote this, League of Legends releases a music video set to music by Porter Robinson. It goes viral immediately and moves fans to tears.
The situation in brief:
- On July 14, the LoL summer event “Star Guardian 2022” started
- The story takes place in an alternate universe and is about Magical Girls
- In typical LoL fashion, there are 12 new skins
- The music video reaches 2,559,425 views in 20 hours (as of July 15 / 1:30 PM)
- In 2018, Riot turned 4 heroines into a K-Pop band and was successful

What is it about? Just in time for the launch of the ten-week summer event “Star Guardian 2022”, Riot released a music video on the official LoL YouTube channel. The event brings back the titular Star Guardian skin line, which belongs to a popular alternate universe.
The Star Guardians are a group of students chosen to protect the universe from dark forces. They can transform into Magical Girls (and Boys!), similar to what has been known since the 90s from Sailor Moon.
The associated skins must of course be promoted, which is why Riot teamed up with American musician Porter Robinson and released a video in anime style. It already reached several million views and thousands of likes and comments on the first day.
“Everything Goes On” is the title, depicting the events after the short story “Twin Stars” by Cat Cheresh. In the now fourth edition of the popular alternate universe, you can expect not only the return of familiar faces but also a new generation of Star Guardians. (via Riot Games)
Fans react emotionally
There are big feelings and tears: Especially the story of the champs Rakan and Xayah resonates well with fans. Many react emotionally and even state that they are moved to tears. But not only their love story, but also the friendship between Kai’Sa and Alkali evokes emotions.
I did not expect to actually cry while watching the video, but here we are. Bringing together Riot’s animation team with Porter Robinson’s emotionally charged music creates such a dangerous piece of art. This time you win, Riot. I will play your broken game a bit more.

The inclusion of male characters, which is rather unusual for the genre, is also well received. Some are even so excited that they wish for the next LoL series from Netflix after Arcane.
But not all reactions are positive. While the story and the video are well received, criticism of the event itself is growing. Especially for a large summer event, the rewards are not significant enough and hardly worth the grind:
In the event, you fight through missions to collect tokens. The chapters are unlocked weekly and each consists of 3 acts. A new chapter can only be started when the previous one has been completed by defeating the 2 bosses.
As a reward, there are mainly icons and emotes.
The first fans are already wishing for their own Star Guardian anime. After the Netflix hit Arcane, there will now be however, a novel in the League of Legends universe first.
