One of the largest German football clubs, Schalke 04, is said to have bought a spot in the LCS tournament of League of Legends.
As reported by EsportsObserver, Schalke 04 is said to have bought the LCS spot from the European team “Elements”. They had already tried to sell their LCS spot in 2015 but could not find a buyer within the specified timeframe.
Schalke would not be the first football club in e-sports
Although EsportsObserver reports that several sources confirm this deal between Schalke and Elements, there is still no official statement from Schalke 04. The deal is allegedly set to be officially confirmed over the course of the week.
Other clubs like VFL Wolfsburg or West Ham have also invested in e-sports and bought FIFA players to represent them in major tournaments. Other sports clubs like Besiktas Istanbul are investing in e-sports as well and had their own LoL team in 2015. It would indeed be a significant step for e-sports in Germany if this deal turns out to be true in the coming days. However, whether Team Elements will remain as it is now is uncertain.
