On March 18, a user on X published information about a new rule from Riot Games that prohibits the monetization of streams featuring games like League of Legends, leaving the community confused and concerned.
What new policy is there? On 03/18, user Spideraxe30 posted on X that there apparently is a new policy for employees of Riot Games that prohibits the monetization of streams featuring the company’s games.
This has apparently been confirmed, as a moderator on the Discord server of Mortdog, a Twitch streamer and gameplay director of Teamfight Tactics, stated: “At the moment, we don’t have to worry about that. The social media department is still working with Mort, and we will keep you informed about how things will proceed in the future.”
This is how the community reacts: The community is quite confused about the new policy from Riot Games. Many do not understand why such a rule has been introduced as streamers automatically promote their employer.
Additionally, some users are now worried about whether there will still be future content from employees for games like League of Legends and others. On Reddit, some users express their concerns.

That is super dumb. August has great content and basically does free advertising during his working hours. He should be able to make money from it.

This smells like legal department nonsense.
- TE_silver notes:
Lol Rioters streaming is literally free advertising, who at Riot even cares if their employees earn something from it, it literally costs the company nothing.
What does this mean for the affected streamers? As of 03/19 at 4 PM, there is still no hundred percent certainty about what the new policy means for future streams of Riot employees.
However, a difficulty might arise as some of the employees are also Twitch partners. They cannot simply demonetize their content when it comes to Riot Games’ games unless they no longer stream any content of those games. So it remains to be seen what this means for the streamers.
Riot has already made headlines this year regarding their employees, as there have been many layoffs. You can read more about this here:
