For League of Legends (LoL), the new champion Gwen has been announced. Armed with a large pair of scissors, she storms the map and is supposed to function primarily in the top lane. Players compare her playstyle to Irelia..
What’s new? Developer Riot Game presents Gwen, the gifted seamstress, in the new spotlight. She was originally a small doll that was then brought to life. The large scissors that she fights with come from her creator.
LoL introduces Gwen as a champion for the top lane. She masters abilities for CC, can reduce incoming damage, and hit multiple opponents simultaneously in AOE.
Gwen’s abilities in the spotlight
Here we briefly introduce the abilities that Gwen masters in LoL:
Passive “Thousand Cuts”: Attacks and certain abilities attempt damage that is dependent on the maximum health of the opponent. If she hits an opponent, she receives a portion of the damage dealt as health back.
Q “Snip-Snap”: In a cone in front of you, you deal damage to all hit enemies with two snips. The last snip deals more damage. Enemies in the center of the cone take true damage, and the passive ability “Thousand Cuts” applies.
For every normal attack you hit, Q collects up to four additional charges. If you use Q when you have charges, these will be used to execute additional snips during the attack.
W “Hallowed Mist”: Summons a mist field around Gwen that grants increased armor and magic resistance. Opponents from outside cannot target Gwen in it. If opponents are in the mist, they can target Gwen. Towers always hit them.
After placing it, you can use W again to reposition the mist. If Gwen walks out of the mist, it is automatically repositioned once.
E “Scissors Jump”: Enhances Gwen’s attacks for a few seconds upon usage. These attacks have increased range, speed, and damage.
R (Ultimate ability) “Needlework”: When you use the ability for the first time, you fire a needle that slows the hit opponent and deals damage. If you hit with an attack or ability shortly after, you can reuse the ultimate. This can happen up to 3 times. Each time, the attack fires more needles and deals more damage.
Additionally, all hit opponents are marked with “Thousand Cuts”.
The new champion is introduced to you in the League of Legends YouTube video:
Where will Gwen be played? From her kit, Gwen is well-suited for the top lane. With her shield and slows, she can effectively protect herself against ganks. Due to her passive ability, she gains sustain so she doesn’t have to teleport back to heal as often. Whether this will remain her only role will still be seen.
What players say about the presentation
This comparison comes up: In the comments on YouTube and also on reddit, players feel reminded of Irelia. Irelia has been in League of Legends since 2010 and was considered a solid pick in the top lane for many years.
On reddit, user tyler980908 writes, “[her kit] feels very old school League”. User Slashari emphasizes that it’s like “the old Irelia”.
Especially Gwen’s ultimate ability makes players nostalgic. Irelia used to hurl her blades at opponents with her ultimate. This somewhat resembles Gwen’s thrown needles. Additionally, the slowing effects and playing on the top lane. Irelia has since been reworked, which is why the emphasis is on the “old” Irelia.
How do you like Gwen’s introduction? Is this a champion you want to play in LoL? And if so, in the top lane or do you have other ideas on how to use her as a jungler? Let us know your opinion here in the comments on MeinMMO.
