Those who have a high rank in League of Legends (LoL) are presumably also a bit smarter. At least that's what scientists from York think.
Video games make you dumb and aggressive. This prejudice still exists in large parts of the population. However, science is fortunately already a step ahead and is examining the connections more closely.
The scientists at the University of York took the time to investigate the relationship between the intelligence quotient (IQ) of LoL players and their achieved rank.
They came to the conclusion: Those who have achieved a high rank in League of Legends generally have a higher IQ.
Unclear whether LoL is the cause or effect
However, the researchers found no evidence that playing League of Legends promotes intelligence. Unfortunately, the underlying studies do not provide any indications.
Instead, there is the scientists' assumption that people who are already good at the necessary skills (tactical thinking, quick decision-making, and solid reaction times) tend to prefer such games. It is not playing that makes one smart, but rather smart people tend to play such games and then excel at them. This is only logical, as success is enjoyable.
Good LoL players with high IQs are good at solving problems and changing shapes in their mind.
Furthermore, when considering age, there is also a clear distribution among the ranks. This follows the pattern “low – high – low,” which means: Very young players tend to have a lower rank, players in their mid-twenties tend to have a high rank, and older players have a lower rank again.
By the way: In shooters, such a connection could not be proven. There, a high rank mainly comes from good reactions and excellent hand-eye coordination. The distribution there is “high, high, low” – young players can also perform well.
Do you believe in the connections between a LoL rank and intelligence?
Recently, there were some changes in LoL – such as infinite levels!
