The G2 Esports team dominated European League of Legends for years. But after 2020, they sold the heart of the team, Luka “Perkz” Perković (22), for a lot of money to the USA. A year later, the consequences are clear: Perkz goes with his new team Cloud 9 to the LoL Worlds 2021, and G2 Esports misses the World Championship qualification.
This is how Perkz’s career went at G2 Esports: The Croatian is a trained Midlaner and shone as an exceptional talent with G2 Esports in the LEC from 2015. The problem: Internationally, it simply wasn’t enough. The teams from Korea and China were always two to three classes better.
Perkz was sure: Only by gathering the best players in Europe in one team would there be a chance against Faker, Uzi, and the other stars from Asia.
Therefore, Perkz made a bold suggestion. He swallowed his ego and G2 brought in the best player from Fnatic, Caps. The problem: Caps also played in the Midlane. To improve as a team, Perkz gave up the glorious spot in the middle and switched to the Botlane.
This is how it went for the new super team at G2 Esports:
- The new version of G2 Esports with Perkz and Caps made it to the finals of the LoL Worlds in 2019 and only lost to FunPlus Phoenix.
- In 2020, the team reached the semifinals, but lost to the later world champion DAMWON Gaming.
During that time, Perkz was considered the engine and heart of G2 Esports. While the other players often joked around, Perkz appeared focused and concentrated.
This was the transfer: After the 2020 season, it became clear that Perkz would be moving to Cloud 9 in the USA. Allegedly, a transfer fee of 5 million US dollars was called, a huge sum for League of Legends.
Perkz shines in the USA, leads Cloud 9 to the Worlds
This is how it went in 2021: Perkz has now qualified for the Worlds 2021 with a dominant series with Cloud 9. He played exceptionally well against Team Solo Mid and led his team to a 3-2 victory.
In the last match, Perkz played a clean 7-0-10 on Varus and thrilled the audience.
G2 Esports lost its decision series in Europe against Fnatic and is not going to the Worlds.
Others go to the USA for money – Perkz, to dominate
This is how it is discussed: For European fans, the situation seems to be a feast. The head of G2 Esports, Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez, is apparently facing a lot of mockery. On Reddit, people joke that he is currently driving through LA completely distraught and begging Perkz to come back home.
There is mockery that with TSM, G2 Esports, and the Chinese team Top Esports, three “big names” will not be at the Worlds. Regarding TSM, people joke: “You can buy a team, but not victories.”
With Perkz, many admire that many star players from Europe go to the USA to earn a lot of money for little performance. Perkz is quite different; he dominates.
Many say: G2 Esports can now watch Perkz at the Worlds. Because he is the only player from the G2 Esports team of 2020 who is now going to the World Championship.
Not everything is going smoothly for Perkz in the USA:
