In League of Legends, the German midlaner Felix “Abbedagge” Braun has just made an impression in the USA. He and his team, 100 Thieves, defeated the highly favored Team Liquid in the playoffs. In a post-match interview, however, he went a bit overboard. He said the forbidden word “Fuck” three times, much to the delight of the cheering crowd.
Who is this?
- Felix Braun is a 22-year-old German. From 2018 to 2021, he had the honor (or misfortune) of playing for Schalke. He was regarded as a talent but faced several crises there. Ultimately, he was sold to the USA when Schalke was relegated from the Bundesliga and decided to sell his place in the LoL league to raise funds.
- In the USA, the German suddenly looked like a superstar, leading a mediocre team, 100 Thieves, to the championship title and dominating the league at times.
- In 2022, however, things went only so-so in the regular season: the team finished third in the league, and in the playoffs, they were eliminated in round 2 against the heavily favored super team, “Team Liquid,” which had bought some of the best players in the West before the season.
Abbedagge decides playoff series with “Backdoor Play”
How did the game end? It was quite a crazy match:
- At the beginning, everything went as planned. Team Liquid won the first 2 games easily with 16-2 and 18-8 kills. Abbedagge lost his midlane to star player Bjergsen hard with 0-5 and 1-7.
- From match 3 on, however, the tide turned, and 100 Thieves won with 18-3 kills. Abbedagge played on Orianna with 6-1-10. That turned the game around.
- The last two matches were won by the underdog 100 Thieves, clinching the match. The decisive final touch was provided by Abbedagge with a “Backdoor Play” – while everyone else was fighting against each other, the German slipped away and single-handedly secured the match.
0-2 down, 3-2 win – The German suddenly has the upper hand
What happened afterward? In interviews after the game, the German midlaner suddenly seemed quite cheerful. He announced:
„I can’t imagine a more satisfying way to win than to totally suck it up 0-2 and then stomp them 3-0, especially against the team that thought it had the best roster in the league.”
What went wrong afterward? If it had stayed at the trash talk, everything would have been okay. But the German had talked himself into a rage and used the forbidden word “Fuck” three times:
- Once when he explained the situation with the backdoor play. He asked himself: „What the fuck are they doing?” and then decided to plan the solo run – the audience laughed then.
- Shortly after: After the second match, he went to the bathroom and just asked himself: „Fuck, what are we doing now?” – the audience roared again.
- He said he had played the first two games anyway as “fucking shit” – thus completing the hat trick.
What is the problem? What sounds like “normal” gaming language is still a forbidden word in the USA and frowned upon in LoL broadcasts. After all, the game is rated for ages 13 and up. It is assumed that Riot will impose a heavy fine for the “triple fuck”. Speculation suggests several thousand dollars, which could cost the German the interview (via twitter):
- Abbedagge also tweeted playfully: „Fuck, I could get a fine.”
- But his boss, Nadeshot, immediately supported him: „We will cover the fines.”
Apparently, 100 Thieves is just glad that things are going so well at the moment.
Nadeshot seems to be quite a cool boss, anyway. After all, he was a professional gamer himself. He has understanding for a lot, but not for everything:
