In League of Legends the German professional player Elias “Upset” Lipp had so much bad luck with the Worlds in 2021: Despite a dominant season, he could not play at the Worlds and had to leave early. Before the Worlds 2022, everything went wrong and he contracted Covid. Now Upset was finally allowed to play and proved his skills: On the first day of the World Championship, he remained without deaths and achieved a Penta-Kill.
Why was the Worlds so difficult for Upset?
- The German ADC from Fnatic, Upset, had an outstanding season in 2021, he was considered one of the best players in Europe and was a key player for Fnatic.
- But before the Worlds in Iceland started, Upset had to leave the team for personal reasons: Without him, Fnatic fell apart and the team broke up in a dispute over the incident. With Adam and Bwipo, Fnatic lost two important players.
- Even the preparation for the Worlds 2022 went poor: First Fnatic could not train properly, then Upset and his supporter Hylissang also became ill with Covid. A start at the Worlds 2 was again doubtful for Upset. The site esports.com even compared him to Marco Reus – who missed every football World Cup.
Upset dominates Day 1 of the Worlds with Miss Fortune and Kalista
This was the first matches: Fnatic has to start the World Championship now already and play through the Play-Ins in Mexico, because they only finished third in the LEC.
This brings advantages, as the team can now prepare against “relatively” weak opponents. Upset had also just recovered from Covid in time and was able to take part.
In the first match, Fnatic had to face Evil Geniuses, one of the best teams from the USA:
- Upset completely dominated the game on Miss Fortune, achieving 6-0-2 kills and was voted Player of the Game.
- His supporter, Rhuckz, who stepped in as a substitute, withstood the pressure of the World Championship and played a flawless 0-0-8 on Leona.
For those who need a little hype for the LoL Worlds 2022:
Fnatic’s second match went even better. Here they likely faced one of the most grateful opponents in the Worlds, a team from Australia called “Chiefs Esports Club”.
Upset played Kalista 9-0-2 and finished the match with an impressive Penta-Kill.
Here one can also clearly see how his 5th kill is “given up” by his teammates – that’s how it should be:
With 2 victories, Fnatic is now in 1st place in Group A. With the victory over Evil Geniuses, they have already handed a loss to the nominal strongest opponent.
The Play-Ins should go relatively smoothly for Fnatic. However, how it will look in the group phase when the heavyweights come is another question.
The European teams are considered absolute underdogs by the bookmakers when it comes to making an impact at the Worlds 2022:
