On Sunday, the final of Worlds 2019 will take place at League of Legends . The mid laner of FunPlus Phoenix, Doinb, throws some shade at G2 Esports during a press conference. However, they started the trash talk at the LoL World Championship.
What kind of game is this? On Sunday around 1 PM, a “best-of-5 series” for the championship in League of Legends will kick off in Paris.
The Europeans from G2 Esports face FunPlus Phoenix, the best team in China. Both are known for their unconventional style, as the mid laners rarely stay in their lanes.
Both teams have a lot on the line:
- G2 Esports could achieve a “Grand Slam” with a victory and crown a strong year – no LoL team has ever achieved the Grand Slam.
- FunPlus Phoenix could make a big name for themselves all at once, just like Invictus Gaming did last year – players like mid laner Doinb or jungler Tian would become the new stars of LoL overnight.
Leading up to the big battle, some remarks are flying around.
Wunder said: “The game against SKT1 was the real final”
How it started: The top laner of G2 Esports, Martin “Wunder” Hansen, had already made a comment towards FunPlus Phoenix after the semifinal against SKT1 (via loadout):
I can say for sure, today was the real final. FunPlus Phoenix will receive a huge reality check next week. They think we are bad, but our revenge will come swiftly upon them.
Wunder made it clear that SKT1 with Faker were the real opponents, and now that they are defeated, the final is just a formality.
In the voice chat of G2 Esports, you could hear the players showing respect for Faker.
Mid laner Caps had a similar sentiment. He said that he would carry the final alone and send FunPlus Phoenix “home.” That was clearly meant as a joke.
Doinb is ready for a fight
This is what Doinb says: The star of FunPlus Phoenix, mid laner Doinb, is getting into these games before the final. He now says in a press conference:
“G2 only defeated SKT by luck. If they had faced us in the quarter-finals, they wouldn’t have made it to the semifinals.”
The quote can be seen in the video at 9:05.
Doinb also appeared to be very ready for a fight. He emphasized his large champion pool, or said he is in excellent shape – people should keep an eye on him.
In the lead-up, Doinb apparently challenged G2 Esports’ ADC, Perkz, to a dance-off. So he’s having fun.
Doinb vs. Perkz – the Rival Next Door
Doinb and G2 Esports’ ADC, Perkz, seem to be engaged in a private duel at the moment. The two have taken rooms in a hotel that are directly next to each other:
- Doinb said that Perkz wasn’t at the press conference today – that might be because he sang for him at night.
- Perkz had previously hinted that he could knock on the wall every night, so they both wouldn’t get any sleep.
This is definitely not meant to be taken too seriously, but rather a bit of trash talk and psychological warfare that comes with such an important game.
In fact, Perkz skipped the press conference because he wasn’t feeling well. However, G2 Esports has already announced (via reddit) that all their players will be 100% fit for the final.
