In the League of Legends, star player Faker had one last chance to qualify for Worlds 2020. However, he couldn’t take advantage of it. They lost the final 0:3 against their old rivals Gen G.
This is the situation:
- Gen G and T1 are two top teams from South Korea. However, neither managed to qualify in the regular playoffs of the LCK. The first 2 teams were sought
- The 3rd South Korean spot for the World Championship was awarded in a “Regional Qualifier” tournament
- On Wednesday afternoon our time, the big final took place. Due to the time difference, we in Germany witnessed high-class LoL on Wednesday afternoon, where it was all at stake for the teams. Because in League of Legends, in the end, only the Worlds title matters
T1 helpless in the final against Gen G – Draft decides games early
This is how the match went: The team around Faker T1 made radical changes after their exit in the playoffs. Faker was on the bench for a while, he is playing again now, but has some new team members with him.
However, the series was completely one-sided from the start in favor of Gen G. They proved to be the better and more complete team and managed to win the series 3:0.
The casters have always criticized T1’s drafts and said: T1 had already lost the games before they started. Faker couldn’t make anything happen on his own. Ultimately, Gen G won the crucial objectives, putting them on the path to victory, which they eventually achieved.
Here in the clip we see what Faker is still capable of. The situation looks hopeless for him and ends with 3 kills for T1.
The coach of T1 decided, despite 2 hard losses, to keep the actual starters like Teddy on the bench. It didn’t help him at all.
T1 said in a statement: They tried everything, but their summer is now over. T1 and Faker will miss the Worlds.
Showdown of the former champs
Why was the game so special? Two of the most dominant teams in League of Legends history are playing against each other:
- T1 became world champions 3 times with Faker: 2013, 2015, and 2016
- Gen G became world champions in 2017 under a different name as Samsung Galaxy, the final back then against T1 was legendary
Many big names from 2019 did not manage to qualify for the Worlds. Almost all teams from Asia that were present at Worlds 2019 are not participating in 2020.
However, some old acquaintances have made it. We have put together a list of the Worlds participants:
