Riot Games is the developer behind League of Legends (LoL). For years, fans have wondered what they would develop as a new game after the massive MOBA hit. Even an MMO was rumored. Now, a developer revealed at the EVO event: It will be a fighting game. Fans dream of a Street Fighter with LoL champions. But a release seems still far away.
This is the announcement: At the annual Evolution Championship Series (EVO), Riot employee Tom Cannon finally announced that Riot Games is working on a “fighting game.”
Cannon said: “I want to let people in on what might be the worst-kept secret in the universe: Yes, we are working on a fighting game.”
Cannon added that he worked on Rising Thunder back then because, as big as fighting games are, they deserve to be enjoyed by even more players. Fighting games have the potential to become bigger.
Back then they made a small indie fighting game and learned a lot. But at Riot Games, they want to create something that players can truly be proud of. They should be able to say: “Yes, this was made for me.”
New Game from LoL: No Name, No Release Date Yet
Is there already a release date? No, it’s said the game has been in development for a while, but there is still much to be done. While progress is being made, there is still no release date in sight.
At the moment, the fighting game from the LoL developers doesn’t even have a name.
LoL Bought Fighting Game Studio 3 Years Ago
This is the background: Cannon previously worked at Radiant Entertainment, which developed the fighting game “Rising Thunder.” Riot acquired the company in 2016 and discontinued the project.
Since then, it has been speculated that the acquired employees are developing their own fighting game for Riot Games. This has now been confirmed after 3 years.
This is how fans are reacting: On reddit, the LoL community is discussing:
- One says: “I can’t wait to complain about my teammates holding me back in 1-on-1s.”
- There is a belief that Riot Games will transfer the LoL license to the fighting game.
- Players are generally joking on reddit that Riot Games is finally justifying the “s” in its name – all those years they only had one game with LoL.
Months ago, it was discussed that Riot Games’ “next game” would be an MMO set in the League of Legends universe – now we know it is coming differently.
