The new League of Legends champion Seraphine has a tough time. At release, she received strong criticism for looking too similar to another champion. Now fans are complaining about her lore, which transforms the sweet girl into a bloodthirsty monster.
What’s wrong with Seraphine? With the latest update 10.22, the champion Seraphine was released in LoL. Due to a leak, it was already known in advance what abilities the new champion would have. And exactly for that, there was criticism, as they were too similar to Sona.
The fans vented this criticism in the champion spotlight. The video is the first LoL spotlight to have more dislikes than likes.
After the release, the complete background story of Seraphine was highlighted. And again, the fans are dissatisfied, especially because of an interaction with the champion Skarner.
Seraphine Turns Other Champions into Magical Earplugs
What is the problem with the lore? In her short story, it is reported how Seraphine uses a Brackern crystal as a magical earplug. This crystal hums in her ear, talks to her, and helps Seraphine to become the new shooting star on stage.
But other beings are also made up of the mentioned Brackern crystals, including the champion Skarner. Originally, there were many of them in the lore, but thieves found the place where they hibernated and stole crystals from living bodies, which killed the creatures.
The fact that the crystal can whisper to Seraphine indicates that it is alive. And that rubs some fans the wrong way.
What is the criticism? The sweet singer who wants to bring harmony into the world processes other champions into earplugs. That does not fit in her eyes at all.
Additionally, there is a voice line between Seraphine and Skarner in which the girl essentially says: “I miss your kind too, Skarner, do you want to hear its song?”.
On Twitter, user levantasim writes that the lore makes Seraphine a “spoiled brat” who ignores the environment and other characters and is only focused on her own career.
What does Riot Games say? Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill, one of the founders of Riot, has also responded to the criticism, stating that this part of the story was actually supposed to be removed.
He promises a fix for the future (via Twitter).
Jeevun Sidhu, one of the game designers at Riot Games and responsible for Seraphine, explained how this misunderstanding occurred.
According to him, Seraphine does not know the story like the players do. She is not aware yet that she interacts with a living being there. The taunt towards Skarner is too much, the game designer admits.
The newest champion Seraphine thus has to deal with some criticism. But she is just one of many that are yet to come. 2 more champions have already been announced by the developers in a preview for Season 11.
