In League of Legends, the champ Sona is currently making a comeback in the bot lane. Until the start of Season 10, she was more frequently seen there. Small balance adjustments are now ensuring that she forms a strong duo with Lux that even professionals are using.
How does the bot lane play out? Sona takes on the role of a mage in the bot lane, dealing damage – a so-called AP carry. Lux, on the other hand, plays a supportive role, although she can also deal damage with her spells.
That is precisely the trick of this combo:
- You try to push the opposing players out of the bot lane with damage.
- At the same time, with Sona’s healing and Lux’s shield, you have options to negate incoming damage.
You are thus forcing fights with the opposing bot lane, which you should, at least in the long run, win. Even if the opponents briefly retreat for healing, you gain XP and last hits.
Why does this suddenly work? The combo appeared shortly after the release of Patch 10.14. It benefited from changes to the rune “Guardian”. This was improved in such a way that the range and strength of the shield were increased. Thus, a tank support is currently not needed in the bot lane.
Additionally, with Patch 10.15, which brought the new champion Lillia to the test server, adjustments were made to the support item “Spellthief’s Edge”. The mana regeneration was increased, which benefits both Sona and Lux.
These small changes were enough to make the combo playable.
Combo is currently a surprise in LoL
Can anyone play the combo of Sona and Lux? The player Schuhbart, who plays in Europe in the highest solo league Challenger, explained in a conversation with Dexerto that while one should not blindly pick the combo, it can completely surprise opponents.
It is especially advisable when the opposing support is weak at roaming, i.e., rotating between multiple lanes.
If the support is firmly tied to the bot lane, you can harass the opponents at will.
What is important for the combo? Both Sona and Lux start with the support item Spellthief’s Edge. Both players can pick the rune Guardian, while Sona can also play more aggressively with Summon Aery or Arcane Comet.
For items, you use:
- Sona – Seraph’s Embrace, Lich Bane, Zhonya’s Hourglass, and Rabadon’s Deathcap.
- Lux – Athene’s Unholy Grail, Redemption, Mikael’s Crucible, and Liandry’s Anguish.
Are there other combos with Sona? Yes, Sona can currently also be used in the same style with Karma. Additionally, she pairs well with tank supporters like Taric. Here, the buff from the rune “Guardian” also helps.
Professionals use the combo, albeit with moderate success
How popular is the bot lane among professionals? As reported by the website Dexerto, the bot lane of Sona and Lux has already been used 19 times in professional tournaments around the world, resulting in 9 wins and 10 losses.
A success with the combo occurred when the team MAD Lions faced off against Team Origin with Sona and Lux in Week 7 of the LEC, securing a place in the playoffs:
It is quite possible that the combo will achieve more victories in the future, as players need to get used to the new situation. A bot lane of Sona and Taric, which was very popular in 2019, also needed some time to establish itself, but ended up being successful.
The upcoming updates do not indicate any nerfs to the combo for now. Instead, however, the next champion, Yone, is on the horizon.
