The workbench in LEGO Fortnite can be upgraded three times, from uncommon to rare and then to epic. How to do this and what you need for it is revealed in the guide.
How do I upgrade my workbench? Aside from the standard model of the workbench, there are 3 additional upgrades – uncommon, rare, and epic. To bring the workbench to the “uncommon” level, you will need 8 planks and 3 armor.
You can obtain the planks by processing wood at your sawmill. Armor can be acquired by defeating the spherical, rolling enemies you find in the open world called “Rollers”.
This is how you upgrade your workbench to “rare”: To unlock the next level of the workbench, you now need 4 materials. You can find these both in caves and in the Drought Valley – a desert region in LEGO Fortnite. You can recognize it by the brown areas on your map.
- 12 Gnarled Root Sticks (Processing gnarled roots at the sawmill)
- 15 Marble Plates (Processing marble in the stone crusher)
- 6 Sand Claws (you get them from the wolves in the Drought Valley)
- 3 Sand Armor (you get them from the “Rollers” in the Drought Valley)

This is how you upgrade your workbench to “epic”: For the third and epic upgrade of your workbench, you will need 3 materials that require more effort. For this, you need to upgrade your tool to “rare” and venture into lava caves.
- 15 Copper Bars (Processing copper and brightcore from lava caves in the metal smelter)
- 25 Obsidian Plates (Processing obsidian from lava caves in the stone grinder)
- 1 Monster Scale (you get it from the golem in the grassland when you kill it)

Why should I upgrade my workbench? It is quite reasonable to upgrade the workbench in LEGO Fortnite, as this is the only way to obtain better equipment. For some materials in the world, you need tools that require a higher level. Furthermore, tools break less frequently the better they are.
But be careful: if you build multiple workbenches in the world, for example, to also craft tools and weapons on the go, you will have to upgrade each one individually. The upgrade of your first workbench does not apply to further workbenches.
In LEGO Fortnite, it can sometimes be annoying when you want to build or farm materials and night falls. You cannot skip it by sleeping – but with another little trick:
