The heroic world in World of Warcraft Legion Remix is a great success. So much so that many now want it in the main game.
A few days ago, a rather crazy adventure began with WoW Legion Remix. In addition to powerful abilities, insane speed, and plenty of rewards, one feature in particular is generating a lot of interest: the Heroic World. A game mode that is well received, and many hope it will become a permanent feature in World of Warcraft.
What is the Heroic World mode? In Legion Remix, the “Heroic World” is an optional difficulty level that can be activated for all activities in the open world. The game explicitly warns about this, as the experience differs from the normal remix experience. The following changes apply in the Heroic World:
- All enemies have much more health and deal more damage.
- Some enemies have special effects, essentially affixes, that make them even stronger.
- All enemies drop more rewards, both bronze and power items.
- There are several achievements that are only available in Heroic World mode.
How hard is the mode really? Here one must clearly say: “It depends.” Because the circumstances are important. Generally, it is a bit easier as a tank, but also more time-consuming, as enemies have longer life spans. However, whether as a tank or DPS, one must be careful about how to use their cooldowns during the leveling phase in Heroic World mode. Just pulling one additional enemy into the fight can already mean death.
It is also important to look closely at the enemies in heroic mode. The affixes have descriptions with important information. For example, the “Explosive” affix causes an enemy to explode at the end of its life, deal high damage, and also leave a damage-over-time effect on the character. However, this effect is not triggered if the enemy is stunned at the time of death.
Other affixes can also be temporarily disabled, usually through stuns or control effects.
Some affixes also clearly indicate which enemies should be prioritized. Because if an enemy has the affix “Summons demons of the Legion regularly,” one should quickly take this opponent down, as the summoned demons are not just “small, weak adds,” but often enemies that have devastating abilities that can make you kiss the ground even faster.
Why does WoW need this mode? Even though this drifts a bit more into personal opinion, a few days in Legion Remix have already shown me how enjoyable a Heroic World mode can be – I almost played 16 hours of Remix in a row because of that. The open world has so far been something that Blizzard has treated rather neglectfully.
For over a decade, there have been few real challenges in the open world. It’s often something you can just casually play while watching a series or chatting. It’s good that there is this “easy world” – many enjoy that. But there needs to be an option for something more challenging.
Yes, with Midnight there is the “Prey” system. It serves a similar purpose. But whether it can even remotely achieve the feeling of danger and the consideration of “Risk & Reward” like Legion Remix does remains to be seen.
However, I am optimistic that Blizzard is listening to the large amount of feedback regarding Legion Remix and the Heroic World mode. Therefore, it’s only a matter of time before some or even all elements of it are incorporated into modern WoW. Perhaps not yet in Midnight – but definitely by the end of the Shadowlands saga. Because the feature is simply too good not to adopt, and perhaps the next expansion Midnight will take a page from it.
