It looks like Riot Games has plans for another competitive multiplayer game that will be released alongside League of Legends (LoL).
League of Legends is already known in the gaming community as a particularly successful MOBA. Now, initial information about a new game from the LoL team has come to light.
What’s new? Riot Games, the creators of LoL, have filed trademarks for “Legends of Runeterra”. The trademarks cover everything from clothing to software.
Update October 2019: We now know that Legends of Runeterra will be a card game set in the LoL universe. We’ve already had a chance to play it. An MMO based on League of Legends is still planned.
What’s new about Legends of Runeterra?
A user on Reddit, zileanpredicts, discovered that Riot has secured several trademarks. The rights were reportedly acquired around mid-October 2018.
What types of trademarks are these? The topics are quite varied. However, it strongly appears that a new game is in the works and there will be a lot of merchandising involved.
The following groups of themes have had rights secured by Riot Games for Legends of Runeterra:
- Electronic and scientific devices
- Stationery and printed products
- Leather goods
- Clothing
- Toys and sports equipment
- Advertising and business
- Telecommunications (which includes transmission and streaming of video games and video game competitions over global communication networks, the Internet, and wireless networks)
- Education and entertainment (for example, organizing and conducting live competitions with video games)
- Computers and science (for example, development of computer software in the field of video games)
What is Runeterra? Runeterra is the world where League of Legends takes place. To this end, Riot Games has created a huge interactive map where you can explore Runeterra.
Is the LoL MMO finally coming?
Several months ago, a LoL MMO was hotly discussed in the gaming community. Riot Games fueled huge hype with a tweet.
Fans loved the idea: The idea of an MMO made by the LoL creators was very well received in the community. People were excited about the intriguing lore that they were already familiar with from League of Legends.
Riot stepped back: The creators then hinted that it was not a suitable time for an MMO. At that time, World of Warcraft was seen as the dominant game.
Perhaps now the right time has come. Or they might pivot to an entirely different game genre.
It’s still unclear what Legends of Runeterra will become. However, the community is eager to see what Riot Games has planned. User Scoodsie writes on Reddit: “I have to say, Legends of Runeterra is a very nice name for an MMO … let me just dream.”
